"Mommy? I can't sleep."
"That's because you aren't trying, love."
"Yes I am."
An exasperated sigh. "Would you like me to sing to you?"
A young Zephira smiled at her mother. "Yes please."
"Alright then, move over." She climbed into her daughters bed and pulled her into her arms. "What would you like me to sing to you tonight?"
"The Mountain Song."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes! Yes!"
She laughed. "Alright," she started humming quietly, then sang.
"Far over the Misty Mountains cold
Two dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day
To find our long forgotten gold
The pines were roaring on the height
The winds were moaning in the night
The fire was red, it flaming spread
The trees like torches blazed with light."
Zephira wasn't sure why, but the song always sounded slightly off to her. Like it was supposed to be sung at a deeper pitch.
"Again," she said, and her mother laughed again.
"Now, where are your manners?"
"Sorry. Again, please."
"That's better." She smiled kindly, and began to sing it again.
Zephira sang along until she could no longer keep her eyes open. Then she fell asleep in her mothers arms.
Her mother noticed her sleeping, but finished the song and kissed her daughter goodnight on the forehead.
"You're going to need to know that song. You're going to go to the Misty Mountains and travel with dwarves. You are destined for great things, Zephira. I have seen it." She whispered, knowing no one was listening.
