۝ Kaelestia ~ The cobbled ring ۝

2 - the cadre (1440 wds)

Seraph Fereshte flew towards the Kaelestial Palace, enjoying Sofiel's fine singing voice and appreciating their planet's white landscape spread far below. The mountains, rivers, trees, and even the grasses were brilliant whites or creams and light greys. Only the Kaelestians themselves, and the creatures that lived with them, had any colour. She joined in with Sofiel's song with a joyous heart matching the rhythm of her wing flaps.

♫"Summoned are we by Borak the Throne,

To grant the wish of the Bright One.

With we two, Borak will not be alone.

Let it be known, thy will be done..."♫

The particle dome lay ahead. Many leagues across, it shielded the Kaelestial Palace and its surrounding city from any attack, its pale blue motes deadly to all but Kaelestian creatures. Fereshte and Sofiel passed through it like pigeons through a cloud. When the palace came into view, both felt the same longing. They had spent their young lives there singing for the Bright One before being summoned on their first mission. They resumed their song.

♫"When we see its fine towers minarets and spires,

Seraphim voices sing of its glory.

How it deserves such heavenly choirs,

And cleanses our hearts of worry..."♫

"Where must we meet Ophan Borak, Fereshte?" Sofiel asked, still humming.

"At the cobbled ring outside the Thrones' ante-room, why?"

"I see two strangers waiting there."

Sofiel's eyes were glowing, her Far Sight scrutinising the figures at the cobbled ring. Fereshte did the same. "You're right, Sofiel, Cherubim! The male has a mission ribbon in his hair and the female wears her eagle face."

"Cherubs, but I thought our cadre would only contain Seraphim."

"Me too. Let's kindle our radiance, so they cannot see us."

"Good idea. I've never seen one close up. We can spy on them and find out what they know."

The sky lit up for a millisecond, a flash so painfully bright that none but a Seraph could look at it, and the pair became invisible.

"Did you hear something, Jango?" asked the female Cherub.

"No."

"Sounded like singing."

"We're outside the Kaelestial Palace, Cylvah. They sing a lot here."

"I suppose."

Fereshte and Sofiel floated down silently and tiptoed around the Cherubim. The Seraphic radiance made all blind to their presence. A pair of red winglets covered their faces, yet they could see each other clearly. They had no need for the spoken word for their minds could join if they wished and their wings made no sound when they kindled.

Staring up at Jango, her head the height of his heart, Sofiel passed a thought. {What red hair the male has, and his fine ribbon means he ranks above us...}

She flew upwards to study his proud features.

{Hmm, I'd hoped for a female cadre leader, but like us, she has no ribbon,} Fereshte projected back, eyeing Cylvah's hooked beak and the prominent brows shielding large brown eyes from the sunlight, her hands covered by thin white gloves. The four Cherub wings were larger than a Seraph's six lacy ones. Like Jango, she wore a short silver sword.
