33 – the cleansing PART ONE

The sun had been behind her when Kaleb left the chariot, a strategic move perhaps, but the glare never worried him. He could look into a volcano and not flinch. His men were unconscious and prostrate on the floor. There were no obvious injuries on their bodies. He eyed her hands. She had no weapon, and the ragged parasol at her feet could not have caused this.

"What have you done to them?"

"They wanted to harm me. I told them to sleep on it."

"Females who use unholy sorcery will be put to death," said Kaleb, raising his weapon, aiming it between her eyes. There was no look of fear there, a slight flickering light perhaps. She looked up to her left and smiled.

There was a click. A misfire. He tried to load another shot, but a hot liquid began seeping from the weapon's handle. The ammunition was melting. He threw it down and watched it dissolve in the sand.

"Your powers are strong, girl," he said, wiping his sticky palm on his breeches, "but they are nothing to me. You will die that much painfully now."

"Your powers are strong, girl," he said, wiping his sticky palm on his breeches, "but they are nothing to me. You will die that much more painfully now."

He was enjoying this. It was always the same with these people. They really believed they knew everything. It was an annoyance to have to seek out a different identity afterward – he'd grown fond of this one – but this child needed a lesson. He'd have to kill his men too. They were expendable, their identities easily exploited. When she saw the might of his power, she would cower before him. Edons always did, especially before he killed them. She would beg for mercy and apologise for her behaviour but it was too late for that.

Kaleb began to shed.
