31 — the girl with the parasol

After administering the sleeping potion in the back of his chariot, Kaleb checked his prisoner's breathing. It had slowed somewhat. The boy had struggled when Kaleb had plunged the needle into his flesh. Ishmael was no match for his strength, but Kaleb couldn't help admiring the boy's spirit. Perhaps he had been rash to earmark Ishmael for sacrifice – his commander could use such a boy for his own missions, especially after the mistake with the attack on the pipe. Kaleb's men had been over-zealous with their training methods. The young soldiers were supposed to die before they had reached it, but one had slipped through and caused costly damage. His commander would not be happy about that. The other tribe were none too pleased either. Although publicly they were enemies, in reality they worked together to control Edon's resources and increase their value. There would have to be a humiliating apology given to the other tribe. He hoped the mistake would not add to his burdens –

Kaleb looked up when the chariot suddenly slowed its progress and then braked.

"Why have we stopped?"

The men said nothing; instead stared ahead, shaking their heads and uttering sounds of disbelief. Kaleb leaned forward and peered past their shoulders. A figure draped in purple stood alone in front of their vehicle, bearing a ragged parasol and a defiant look. It was impossible. How did she get here?

Kaleb knew of local females who practiced some godless sorcery. He had always considered it superstitious nonsense – these women had no real powers – but to silence any doubters he'd executed a few. No matter; he had no time to kidnap and ransom this girl as he'd threatened earlier – she had gone too far.

"Kill her!" he commanded, and, after sharing a glance, his men opened the doors, their weapons over their shoulders.

He waited for the sound of gunfire, as he strapped Ishmael to the seat. He heard nothing. He looked through the windows. His men had vanished. She still stood there unharmed, staring at the floor, smiling. He cursed, pulling his weapon from his waistband, and opened the door.
