"Sophie, wake up. Wake up, wake uppppppp." I recognized it as my dear older brother Max's voice and I also heard my new best friend/ little sister Clary's voice. Jeez, can't they just let me sleep. It's 5 in the morning, are they crazy. "Guys go away, I want to sleep". "No can do little sis. Today is our 16th birthday and I want to make it a special one." Max said. While he was talking he managed to fling the sheets of of me and when I was shivering in the cold I thought that I just could get up. By this time Clary left the room and went to the kitchen. "Max you say that every year, what's so special about this one". I asked my brother with curiosity and annoyance. He rolled his eyes and walked across the room to my mirror in the corner of my bedroom to check his brown hair, to see if it's still in model. He's such a vanity. "Well I won't tell you but it's going to be awesome, just like me." Now it was my turn to roll my eyes. "Your such an ass." He glares at me and threw my clothes at me, they hit me pretty hard for 5:15 in the morning. "Hey what was that for?" "Well you wouldn't speed up, so I did it for you now go shower." I did as what I was told and 10 minutes later I was ready. And they say girls take for ever to get ready ha. When I was at the kitchen my brother and my best friend were already there. I could also spot Luke in the kitchen. I said hi to him and he congratulated me with my birthday. I said thanks and offered him a pancake. He said yes, of course he said yes. Hello it's pancakes. You can't say no to pancakes. When I gave him his pancakes he looked at me and began talking, I zoned out and thought about our last birthday together with our parents. We just turned 5 years old. We didn't do anything expensive or exciting, we just sat there with the four of us. Mom, dad, Max and me. We just ate my mothers homemade cake and made a ton of jokes. But it felt like home, I woke out of my daze because Jocelyn spoke and her voice made me jump in the air. I didn't know she was there, of course my awesome brother Max was rolling on the floor from laughter and I was glaring at him like shit. She said that she wanted to give us something that was from our parents. When she mentioned our parents he stopped laughing and stood up. She walked to her dresser and picked two little packages from the drawer. She walked over to us and handed us the presents. She looked at us with an emotion I couldn't place. I think it was love and sorrow and regret all in one and also like she knew our parents, but as quickly as it arrived it disappeared. I didn't know why she looked like that I mean it's not like she's family or something right? She broke my train of thoughts by telling us that they asked in a letter to not let us open it till our 16th birthday. I told her thanks and opened the package. When I saw what was inside it I had tears in my eyes, it was my mothers necklace. She always wears it, I've never seen her not wear it. There also was a sort of stick with a silver like snake on it in the box. I have no idea what it is but there was also a note attached to it. It said: "Dear Sophie if you get this present, we're no longer here anymore. Don't be sad, we are in a better place now. This necklace will protect you from any form of harm. I have worn it for my entire life and my mother before me and her mother and so it goes on. Promise me you take care of your brother, alright? Although I know your brother will take care of you. Try to behave a bit and keep you two out of trouble, right? You just need to know that we are very proud of you and of your brother. We love you two with our whole heart and we are so sorry. We love you, sincerely your parents -xxx-." When I was done reading the tears just flooded across my pink tinted cheeks and I ran to my shared bedroom as quick as I could. I fell on the bed and I just cried. I heard a knock on the door and I knew that it was Max, because we are twins we sense that sort stuff. I wanted to yell go away as well as saying come in. I wanted to be alone but I also wanted some company so I decided to let him in. He came in and sat on the bed. He didn't ask me any questions because he knows me more than I know myself, so he knows that if I'm sad or angry I don't answer, I just stare into space and cry. He just sat there and hold me in his arms and let me cry. He even cries with me, so we're crying together. A while later we feel a little bit better, because for the first time since the death of our parents we just had let it go. I thought about the note in the present but it didn't said anything about the sort of stick with the silver like snake on it. Should I ask Max? I thought about it and I just wanted to ask it so I asked. "Hey Max." "Yeah what's up." "Well in my present there was a sort of stick with a silver like snake on it, do you know what it is." "No I don't, I was wondering that myself. I got one too." "No way, you too." "Yeah I just told you, I think your becoming deaf." And just like that the moment was gone. Let handle that to Max. "Shut up, you ass." He grins and puts a hand on his heart as if I had hurt him and he said. "Ouch, sis that hurts. How can you say that to your own brother?" And I answered with "just like that." And we laughed and headed back to the kitchen. Jocelyn and Luke were still there and looked at us sad. It was a bit awkward, luckily then my other best friend/little brother Simon came in. He started to talk about a new game he bought and I'm a little bit a gamer myself, I wanted to know everything about the game. He told Jocelyn and Luke about this huge gig who is not huge but small, let's say he's just not popular yet. I can still remember the day we first met. We lived with Jocelyn and Clary for just a week and then Clary decided to introduce me to Simon. So after school she took Simon home and we politely introduced to each other. My brother Max was a bit of a jackass. He always is when he is in overprotective Bro-mode. He was very rude and was always glaring at him. Simon turned to me and asked me: "is your brother always so charming." And I couldn't handle it anymore and I just laughed my ass of. Max couldn't laugh at it, but after we explained to him Simon wasn't interested in me he became a lot nicer to him. We began to talk about video games, movies and series and a lot of other things. That was amazing. Simon snapped his fingers before my eyes. "Hey Soph, anybody home." "Oh hey Simon, yeah I was just thinking." "Alright so for Clary's acceptance letter to art school we are going to a poetry act of my friend Erik and after that we're going to a club." Simon reminded me. Oh shit, Erik's poetry sucks so bad, you can't even call it poetry, it's just random words he wrote on paper. But he's Simons friend and Simons my friend so I guess I could go. "So Soph what are you saying?" "Alright let's get this over with." "Yeah girl that's the spirit." My brother yelled from across the room. How can he even hear that? "Than what are we waiting for, come on then. Of to Erik's awful poetry." Max said. But before we go to Erik, Jocelyn wanted to talk to Clary, Max and me about something important because we were now 16 years old and everything is changing from there. I know I'm in puberty but is that so important. I mean we already had THE talk, so that isn't it either. Well I will just wait. Jocelyn came to us and she began to talk about how demons existed and that there were people like her who protect the "mundanes" like they call it. Then she draw something on her arm with the sort of stick. She explained to us that it's a stele. She said that my brother, me and Clary are shadowhunters. My first reaction was Awesome, that would be really cool. Clary's reaction however was a little bit more furious and she left the building and went to the poetry thing from Erik and of course me and Max followed her, after apologizing for Clary's behavior.
