A Duet and a Date

"Beck?" Jade said softly into her phone. Well, actually, it was Cat's phone. But Cat decided not to ruin the moment. If Jade used up all her phone call, though, how could she call Tori and invite her over? Cat pondered on this, while listening to the conversation. Multi-tasking!

"Jade?" Beck replied, probably not aware he was on speaker. "I'm sorry," they chorused, and Cat giggled at how cute it was, trying to muffle the sound into a pillow. Her red velvet hair was a little frizzy, since she'd forgotten to straighten it. Speaking of red velvet...

"Oh my God! Are the cupcakes burnt?!" Cat screamed, then she rushed to the kitchen. Thankfully, the cupcakes were a perfect golden and very soft. Cat carefully spread the red velvet icing across each cupcake, adding a little treat on top. Three had mini marshmallows, and three had tiny strawberries. Jade's boots came clattering down the stairs, and she walked in in a lordly manner.

"Hey, Jade! Want a cupcake?" Cat asked, trying to decide herself. Marshmallows were nice.., but strawberries were so sweet! "So-o-o... How'd it go with Beck?"

"Hmm... OK. They look good, but if these poison me, kitten, I will sue." Jade joked, taking a strawberry one. "Beck? It was great. We're both sorry. We might get back together, but right now we're taking a break from relationships."

"Aww! That's so sweet!" Cat beamed, taking a bite of her marshmallow cupcake. "They are pretty good! Did you know that my hair is the exact colour of these cupcakes? True story."

"Yeah. Do you ever wonder if the hair dye seeped into your brain?" Jade rolled her eyes at Cat's terrified look. "Kidding! Don't take everything to heart!"

"Want to sing a duet? It'll be so much fun!" Cat exclaimed.

"OK, I suppose." Jade shrugged, trying to make out she couldn't care less, but the corners of her mouth twitched into a smile.

"I'm picking the song!"

"No, I'M picking the song."

"Oh. Jade's picking the song!"

"Cat, your CD's are rubbish," mumbled Jade, tossing yet another over her shoulder. Cat shrieked and ducked as it hit the wall.

"You're breaking all my CD's!" Cat grumbled, picking it up and slotting it back into her CD rack.

"OK, here's a halfway decent one! We'll sing..." Jade scanned the song list, then her eyes screeched to a halt near the bottom. "True Love." As Cat opened her mouth, Jade quickly added, "This is NOTHING to do with Beck!"

"Whatever you say," Cat whispered secretly, giggling. She then pushed the CD into her CD player, and her and Jade looked at each other. "Candy Crusher?" Cat checked, receiving a curt nod from Jade in return. See, the two had often done duets, and made up their own dance routines with code names. So as the song started, they stood back to back, before starting to sing.

"Sometimes I hate

Every single stupid

Word you say," they sang out. Cat lowered her voice, and somehow, it was no longer a high pitched squeal. It was soft, gentle, enticing, beautiful... The voice of a true singer. Jade did the same, and their voices linked perfectly together, like soul mates.

"At the same time,

I wanna hug you,

Wanna wrap my arms around your neck...

But I hate you, I really hate you,

So much I think it must be,

True love, true love..."

Jade's voice changed a little. It wavered, became a little higher, and her eyes became dark and lifeless. The happy side she'd been showing just minutes before stepped back, and the miserable, secretive, lonely side had returned.

Cat paused it, then walked over to her friend, grasping Jade's palm in hers. "You're not over him yet, are you?" She said softly.

"No," Jade whispered. Her shoulders were slumped, her lower lip was quivering, and her shadowy eyes were gleaming with tears. "But I will be soon, kitten. You watch..."

Cat rushed over to her phone, which had just wolf-whistled. Jade had left a whole ago, but they'd been messaging on and off. But the message wasn't from Jade. It was Robbie.

Robbie: Hey Cat. I was wondering... Want to go to the cinemas with me?

Cat's heart fluttered.

Cat: Of course I do! What time?

Robbie: Five?

Cat: Sure! Meet you at the VUE entrance?

Robbie: Sounds like a date.

Cat: Isn't it? Hee hee! What shall I bring?

Robbie: Just bring you. <3
