Sunshine. The spice filled smell of a cup of tea. A sight of bright yellow flowers.
A push notification on my phone told me that someone had bought my photos. More money to spend time with Abigail, which is good I guess.
Abigail smiles across the table at me, her stark white teeth glistening in the sun. Black rimmed glasses line her face, her hair is curled and a collared navy dress adorns her body.
"What's that?" She asks, nodding to me.
"Hmm?"
"Your phone buzzed."
"Oh. Someone just bought my photos is all."
"That's great!"
I nodded, smiling as I looked at her sparkling green eyes in the sun."Would you like to come to work with me today? Elle is in need of a new photographer. Your pictures are gorgeous Joshua. I think you'd be great at the job."
"Yes! That'd be amazing!" I exclaimed. I never thought I would've had a chance at taking photos for a big time magazine. I'm glad I had Abigail.
Later in the day, Abigail had set up a meeting for me with the boss of Elle. I was quite nervous. I had brought my portfolio of pictures and seemly stumbled through the interview. I was an anxiety ridden mess.
The boss said he would call me back if I made it.I shakily walked out of his office, clutching my photo book and pushing my glasses further up the ridge of my nose.
"How did you do Joshua?" Abigail inquired cheerily.
" I-I don't know. He said he'd call me back? Is that good?" I said, shaking.
"That's great!" She said, writing something down on her computer.
She looks up to me. "Is something the matter?"
I shake my head and smile. "Just anxiety I guess."Abigail takes my hand and leads me out of the corporate headquarters.
"Where are we going?" Josh asks, being lead down the sunshiny street by an even brighter girl."We are headed off to take your mind off it. You'll get a call later tonight, I know it. And besides, my day is over anyways." Abigail stated, grabbing my hand, dwarfing her own in comparison. She walked like she knew where she was headed. I would hope she knew.
"What are we gonna go do?" I ask, laughing a bit as she trips and regains her balance after stumbling over cobblestone.
"We" The sunshine says, pushing a lock of hair out of her face, "Are going to the Queen's. To see the changing of the guard."
Later that night, she had taken me by the river. She said the boats coming into the harbor always looked spectacular at night.
"A lot of good it'll do ya to see them in the day. They look much more fun at night anyhow." She said, taking my hand and staring at the boats
"Shut up Josh. She'll never like you. No use getting into a girl anyways. You're only here for five more months." My thoughts rambled. Still, I couldn't help but smile at the way she held to my hand.
My phone buzzed with a call. I took it, and not a minute later Abigail was asking what is was about. I couldn't contain myself.
"I got the job!" I screamed, dancing around with Abigail in a burst of pure ecstatic. "Oh Joshua, I'm so happy for you." Abigail said smiling. I made the sudden move to pick up her small frame in a massive hug, her brown clogs lifting off the pavement. "Thank you." I said smiling, a tear forming in my right eye. At the moment I didn't care what I looked like or whether or not my blonde hair had a cowlick, or something of that nature.
I was so happy I'd found her.
"No problem you bloody American. I care about you a lot Joshua." Abigail giggled, hugging me back as I set her down.
Who would've known I could've fallen for a quirky British girl.
