April wheels me into the hospital to my room. As soon as she saw me when we arrived at the hospital, she ran to me and hugged me, crying. She said that she wanted to be friends and that she was so worried about me. I couldn't help but laugh because I never liked April and I don't think she liked me, but I don't really have many friends at the hospital, so I agreed.

"Remember that you can page me at any time for anything, I'll be here for you because that's what friends do, I think. I don't have a lot of friends," April says.

"Don't worry, I'll be fine. And I don't have many friends either," I admit.

April's pager goes off. I used to love that sound, the sound of a new case, a new surgery. But now, all I can think about is that the doctors who took care of me after the plane crash must have heard the same sound, but I was the new surgery.

"I have to go, but I'll see you later," April says and rushes out of the room.

Suddenly I'm alone again.

I look around the hospital room for something to do. I've been here for five minutes and I'm already bored. I see the TV remote on a nightstand on the left side of my bed, and I grab it and turn on the TV. About an hour later, I fall asleep.

"Hey, Lex?" I hear a low, soft voice call my name.

"Hmm?" I mutter, keeping my eyes closed.

"We're being discharged. I know it's midnight, but we can go home Lex," Mark says. He sounds so excited, but I just want to go back to sleep.

"Yeah, we can go," I say. I don't open my eyes.

"You need to be in a wheel chair for a while and come here even day for physical therapy, but you can go home. We can go home," he explains.

"Mm hmm," I mutter.

"Lex, you coming?" Mark asks.

I'm too tired to even open my mouth.

Mark sighs. A few moments later, I feel his arms wrap around me, and he lifts me into his arm.

"I know you're tired, but we have to go home. I can't take being a patient anymore," Mark says.

He gently lowers me into my wheelchair, puts a blanket on my lap, and kisses my forehead. He begins to wheel me away, and the gentle movement makes me fall asleep again.
