Jackson and I arrive at the ER, ready to treat the patient we were paged for. I look around and see 4 or 5 injured people being brought into the hospital, one right after the other. Then, I see an old woman holding a young girl's hand walks into the ER behind the injured people. I instruct Jackson to go treat one of the patients. I go over to a paramedic.

"What happened?" I ask.

"The family was driving when the grandfather lost control of the wheel. We're still not sure why, Doctor Hunt said they're going to page Shepherd after his wounds are treated," the paramedic explains.

I thank him and walk over to April "Where do you want me?" I ask.

"Go over to bed 3. I think the mom is in that bed," April says.

I head over to bed 3, where a woman is laying in a bed, covered in cuts. One of her wrists is swollen, probably fractured, and her cheekbone looks broken, too. I see a particularly deep cut on her arm and decide to start by treating that cut. When I'm about halfway through, I notice the little girl from before looking at me and the woman on the bed.

"Is this your mom?" I ask.

She nods.

"Well, just letting you know, she's going to be okay. Just a few cuts and minor injuries," I assure her.

She nods again.

I continue working, but the girl just stands there.

"Do you, um, need anything?" I ask, unsure of what to say.

She just stares at me.

"Hey, where's your grandma? Is she okay?" I ask, suddenly remembering the woman she walked in with.

The girl shakes her head.

I get up and the girl grabs onto my arm. She leads me over to the waiting room, where her grandmother is sleeping on a chair.

"She's okay, just asleep," I tell the girl.

She shakes her head.

I go over to the grandma and feel for a pulse.

"I can't find a pulse," I mutter.

The girl stares at me, wide-eyed.

"I need a crash cart over here!" I yell.

A nurse brings over a bed and a crash car. I lift the woman onto the bed. I charge the paddles and try to revive the woman multiple times with no luck. I set the paddles down and walk over to the girl, who is in the waiting room. I crouch down in front of the girl's chair and take a deep breath, preparing myself for what I would have to tell the girl.

"I'm so sorry, your grandma didn't make it," I say gently.

The girl looks up at me, eyes wide and full of tears. "She's dead? Grandma's dead?"

"I'm so sorry for your loss. Do you want to come with me to see your mom?" I offer, remembering that I still had to treat the girl's mom.

The girl nods and I lead her over to her mom's bed.
