The Devils Mate

The Kitties.

  I awoke later than normal and with a splitting headache.

  "Bloody hell." I mumbled, rolling over to find Lucifer was no longer in bed.

  Groggily, I sat up and stretched, "good evening your Highness, the master has had breakfast sent for you," the maid said and gently placed the tray of food at the foot of the bed.

  "Leave it to him to know exactly the moment to send you in, creeper." I scoffed and took a bite of the bread roll. "I've never seen you before, what's your name?" I asked through a mouthful of food,

  "Alethia, your highness." She said curtly,

  "You don't need to be so formal, I'm not the Queen yet. Everyone needs to calm the hell down, I'm still just some regular old human. Lucifers just got a stick up his ass about everyone being so proper. It gets old, you know?" I said laying down.

  "My lady, surely you can't mean that, the master wishes only the best for yo-" I cut her off,

  "Himself, he wishes the best only for himself." I sighed and rolled out of bed, "where is the brute anyway?" I asked,

  "The king is in a very important diplomatic meeting at the moment, he wishes to remain undisturbed." She said,

  "Well in that case I simply must make an appearance to irritate him, but first, something for this damn hangover." I growled and stumbled to the washroom. "Wow, I look like shit." I suppose I forgot to take my makeup off last night.

  "My lady, there is no one in the world more beautiful than you," she spoke sweetly,

  I snorted a bit, "wouldn't that be smashing, 'the fairest in the land', no, not I, I am much too human to be the most beautiful. I suppose Rias has a run at that, eh?" I dug through the medicine cabinet until I found what I was looking for,

  "She is most certainly an undeniably beautiful woman," she agreed,

  "You don't suppose she and uh- what's-his-name Sirzesk? Sirzest? Are still here?"

  "Do you mean Lord Sirzechs? Yes, the Germorys are still present."

  "Ah yes, Sirdouche, I will be weary to avoid that one." I said wagging my finger.

  "You're quite outspoken, my lady." She stammered,

  "I just can't wait until my mortal life is over and I don't have to deal with this anymore, when I'm a crispy old woman no one will care what I do or say." I said flippantly, "I know I'm 'not supposed to go anywhere without guards', but you seem like a good enough guard, how would you like to go to the gardens with me?"

  "Anything, my lady,"

  "Ah, ah, ah, first you have to stop saying 'my lady' it makes me feel old and I'm quite certain you've been around much longer than I. In private you can call me Kora." She blushed lightly and nodded,

  "Thank you- Kora."

  "One down, 87 million other servants to go!" I said and began our journey to the gardens.

  "Do you think we should bring a gardener with us? They get quite confusing and we may get turned around."

  "Oh, do not worry sweet Alethia, I have an impeccable sense of direction."

  We walked through the massive flower beds and trees before I was effectively lost, but I would never admit that,

  "We've been at this intersection of flowers and this lamp post 3 times already." She pointed out,

  "I just like these particular flowers." I said and continued towards what looks like a gazebo.

  "I suppose it will be dinner by time we find out way out, it's already been quite some time, or 5 minutes I have no sense for the concept." I said and she laughed,

  Success.

  "I expected a much different person based on all the things I heard about you." She said quietly,

  "Oh yeah? Like what? That I was some prim and proper lady or that I was a devilish miscreant who tried to escape and nearly caused the extinction of the human race? Or perhaps it was some rumor that I was actually an alien sent from another planet to take back the earth?" I said,

  "No, nothing like that, people all said you were extremely kind and had quite proper mannerisms. I expected you to be a bit of a snob if I may dare say."

  "Well, I can be kind when I choose, but I prefer to stare daggers into everyone, and as for proper? I know as much about manners as a cat does of sweets, they can't taste sweet things, did you know that? I miss my cat." I sighed,

  "We have garden cats to keep the mice away, I'm sure we could find them in the cat house, or running around hunting." She said,

  "Why has this been hidden from me? We must slide on over there right now!" I said and promptly began to journey once again.

  "My- Kora please slow down we're practically running!" Alethia complained.

  "I must get to the kitties as fast as possible!" I said facing her and promptly ran into something hard.

  "Ow, what the fu- oh, hello Lucifer." I said as I tried to continue past him.

  "Thank you Alethia, I will be taking care of her from here." He said and grabbed my collar,

  "What are you doing without a guard?" He asked pointedly,

  "She was quite the good guard." I said and attempted to slip out of his grip. "Please let me go! I want to see the kitties!" I whined,

  "You're acting like a child," he commented,

  "Perhaps I should act like a woman and seduce one of the gardeners so they will take me." I huffed and heard a growl before I was thrown over his shoulder. "Seems as though this is becoming a regular occurrence." I commented and let him carry me.

  He walked for a few minutes before I was placed on a bench and heard meowing.

  "KITTIES." I squeaked as they began to crawl all over me vying for my attention.

  "This is the best day of my life." I said as I pet them all. After a while they calmed down and a few had fallen asleep, Lucifer suggested we go back for dinner.

  "Can I come back later?" I asked and gave him my best begging look, batting my eyelashes and all.

  "Where has this Kora been the entire time?" He said and kissed my forehead, "I hear she's been giving her opinions on everything quite loudly and openly." I chuckled.

  "Because I can, and I've formed a lot of opinions that no one will listen to so I will say them loudly for all to hear." I said and kissed the kitties before getting up, "but, I am getting hungry so I will concede and come with you."
