You were immersed in the movie you were watching when Jason came home late that night after patrol, physically and mentally exhausted from dealing with the criminals of Gotham. He entered from the window that was connected to your bedroom, but he decided to take a shower first before joining you in the living room. He had been busy the whole night either dealing with lowlifes or dealing with the people involved in the human trafficking that had resulted in many Gotham citizens being declared missing. You knew cases like this hit Jason hard, which usually made him a little closed off from you. You understood, having went through something similar, that he needed time to process whatever he saw, and he would join you when he was ready. You knew Jason was home as soon as the shower started, but you didn't want to bother him, even if you needed him. Sighing, you paused the movie and walked to the kitchen to make a drink. Who were you kidding? Jason had been closed off for a long time in your relationship, including when you first got together. Of course the two of you moved on from the awkward stage of beginning a relationship, but now it was starting to feel like the candle burned out for him. You leaned up against the counter and waited for the water to boil, letting your thoughts about Jason distract you as you prepared the drink.
By the time your water had finished boiling, Jason had exited the bedroom and joined you in the kitchen, pecking your cheek lightly as he headed towards the fridge. You gave him a small smile and poured the hot water into your mug, adding whatever was closest to you in your water. While you were silently making your drink, Jason dug through the fridge until he found the leftovers he stashed in the back early in the morning.
"How was patrol?" you asked. "I saw that Dick was thrown off a building."
"Yeah," he said and put the food in the microwave. "He actually threw himself off."
"Why?" you asked, cupping your mug in your hands.
"I don't know, (Y/N)," he said.
You frowned, "You okay, Jay?"
He looked over to you and scratched at the back of his neck, "I've been thinking lately about our relationship."
"Jay?" you asked, placing the mug on the counter. "What are you trying to say? Are you breaking this off?"
Jay sighed and nodded, making the tears you tried to keep in fall down your face. You sucked in a breath and wiped the tears away, wiping them on your pajama pants.
"Really, Jay?" you quavered. "After all we went through, you're doing this? I know that I have not been the perfect partner, but I have been there for you even before we were dating. I was your best friend, and you revealed your feelings to me before I had the guts to. I know I can't fix you and all of the problems you go through, I'm only human. I can't sleep at night knowing that you're out there and possibly could be killed. I know that I didn't do the best I could to help you, but I thought my love was enough."
You wiped away more tears and grabbed your mug, walking out of the kitchen towards the couch, "I'll sleep on the couch and I'll be gone by noon tomorrow."
You laid down on the couch, covering yourself with your blanket, and pulled it over your head. When it covered your head, you rolled to your side and finally let the tears fall. Your throat was sore and your chest ached. Who knew that your heart would be shattered by your boyfriend, especially your only friend that you ever kept. You felt the couch dip by your feet, causing you to move them closer to the back cushions.
"(Y/N)," Jason said quietly, "I don't want it to be like this. If I didn't have this life, I would have never done this to you. I would have proposed, gotten married and have that apple pie life every hero talks about when they are in a relationship. The case I has tonight, it struck home. Hundreds of men and women were crammed into these shipping containers, alone and scared of what was going to happen to them. This made me realize that you would be safer if you would stay away from me. I ruin everything I touch, and I don't want to do that to you."
After he finished his speech, you sat up and removed the blanket from your head, "Do you really think that's the best thing to do? I have been safer with you than I have when I lived alone, so don't go the easy way out and ruin our relationship by preventing yourself from ruining me. I love you, Jay, your stupid, cliché decisions and all."
Jason laughed and wiped his hands on the couch, "I love you, too, (Y/N)."
"Then don't let me go."
