Honey I'm a Nightmare Dressed as a Daydream

"There is no story." I said simply.

"Yes, there is. Stop closing up on me. Can you please just open up just for a second?" He said persistently.

"I'm not telling you something so personal on our first date. I don't know if all the girls you "date" tell their past to someone they've just met, but I certainly won't." I said defensively.

"Ok?" I said.

"Ok." He said, sighing as he looked at the menu.

And just when I thought I got the idea through his very thick head, he spoke again, "My name is Kiah King. I'm 18 years old. I'm in a gang called Black Diamonds. I hook up with girls and rumored to leave them heartbroken, so I'm your typical bad boy. Your turn." He smirked, showing me how easy it was to just open up.

"It's not that easy. My past is painful. It's not just going to slip off my tongue." I was interrupted by the waiter, "Okay, are guys ready to order?" The waiter said with a beaming smile awaiting our requests, thankfully ending that conversation.

"I'll have the seasoned chicken with garden salad and water to drink." Kiah said.

I looked at the menu scatterbrained. I didn't really know what to order. The fanciest Italian restaurant I've ever went to was Olive Garden, if that really counts. In my experience, having a single mom doesn't really entitle you to a fine dine lifestyle.

"I'll have the same except with an iced tea." I said with a smile and handed the menus back to the waiter. The waiter nodded as he took the order down on a small white pad and took the menus.

"It should be done within 20 minutes." He said courtly as he went to another table to take an order.

Kiah looked at me with his dark eyes, I wondered how he could just open up to be so direct, straightforward about his life. He made it seem so easy.

My life wasn't the hardest for sure. I know there was someone else in the world in a worse situation than me, but somehow my past seemed unbearable right now.

And, I couldn't just leave myself so exposed, vulnerable like that.

I panicked and unsure what to do, I made up an excuse to leave the table, "I have to go to the bathroom. I'll be right back." I said quickly grabbing my clutch and getting out of my chair.

"Ok." He said as his eyes looked at me in contempt and pulled out his cell phone to occupy himself.

I walked straight to the bathroom and in seconds dialed Brooklyn. This was definitely a best friend situation.

"What's up?" Brook said.

"I'm kinda in a situation, and I need your help." I said anxiously.

"Ok. Where did you hide the body?" Brook said with a giggle.

"Brook!" I said annoyingly.

"Ok. Ok. What is it?" She said calming down and taking me seriously.

"Well, I'm kinda on this date with Kiah." I tried to explain with a calm voice.

"What?! You are going on the date with most talked about boy this week, and you failed to mention this vital piece of information?" She said with a typical-best friend-freak-out-over-hot-guy-voice.

"I know. I'm sorry, but I need your help." I said.

"So what's going on?" She said, her voice seeming more serious and focused.

"Well, he keeps trying to dig up my past." I said.

"What's wrong with that? It kinda shows he wants to know more about you in depth." Brook said, confused.

"I can't tell him." I signed.

"What are you talking about? Why can't you tell him?" Brook said curiously.

"Did you kill someone, and now you're on the run? I promise I won't tell the police. You can trust me." I could hear her giggling on the other line. She can be such a goof ball.

"I did not kill anyone. Why would you think that? You know what? Nevermind. Don't answer that. Please just focus!" I said.

"Fine, I'll be serious!" Brooklyn said, giving up and became serious.

"My family and I have a past that I'm not proud of, and I don't want share it with anyone right now." I said truthfully.

"Well, then, he should respect that if he wants to be with you." Brook said.

"You're right! Thanks." I said with a smile.

"Anytime, Issie." I hung up.

I walked to the table.

"Look, I like that you want to know more about me, but I just want to take things slow." I said, glad that I set clear boundaries about my past.

"So we have things?" I rolled my eyes at the fact that I'm pretty sure he remembered nothing except that.

"I don't know, maybe. Ok?" I said flustered.

"I won't pry." He said.

"Ok." I said with a little attitude.

"I just wanted to get to know the girl I've been thinking about since I've came back to school." I smiled, actually taking in the compliment instead of ruining the moment like I always do.

"I still don't know you, and I'm really only here because of the deal." I said.

He frowned, so I decided to change the subject.

"So you're a bad boy." I said with a smile.

"I guess I could describe myself as that, why do you make it sound like it's such a bad thing? Being bad makes you interesting especially when your whole school calls you that."

"No, it makes you do bad things." I said, looking into his eyes.

"Depends on you think a bad thing is. But I'm guessing you, little Ms. Goody Two Shoes is incapable of getting her hands dirty." He said with a mischievous smile as he pointed at me.

"Wanna bet?" I said.
