Because of several pecularities found only in the Pronghorn Antelope, it is not closely related to any other hoofed animal. There, is no longer is classified as a true antelope as it had been previously.

Once a year the Pronghorn Antelope sheds the outer sheaths of its horns, a characterstic unique to this animal.

Another oddity is its signal system. As an enemy draws near the herd, the first animal seeing it raises the long white hairs of its hindparts. This signal is visible for miles because of the light this reflects. By repeated raising of the hairs, the members of the herd quickly signal to each other that danger is near. At the same time, a scent gland is activated which emits a strong odor.
