He had always fascinated you. Well, if he actually was a he. It was possible they were a she, but you and the other mercs always referred to Pyro as a 'he'. And it's not like he ever hastened to correct you.

'Mrrph?' Pyro cocked his head at you. The slight pitch raise at the end of the word told you he was asking a question. He was holding up a picture of a balloonicorn he had drawn in crayons. It was very messy, and a lot of little hearts were drawn around it. You nodded and drew a little smiley face in the corner.

You and Pyro had a way of communicating with drawing and pictures. At first he kept melting the wax crayons or setting the paper on fire, but after a few tries he'd actually started putting crayon to paper and drawing out his emotions. For example, he'd draw a colourful picture of a balloonicorn when he was really happy, like now. If he was upset, he would tend to draw raining clouds with a sad balloonicorn, and if he was angry he would draw a red, angry balloonicorn with raging fire around it.

At first, the other mercenaries had laughed when you proposed to use pictures as a way of communication. Scout was particularly nasty about it since his idea of teaching Pyro sign language had earned him a night in Medic's lab. But you had wiped the smirks off their faces when you showed them what Pyro could draw.

Pyro clapped his hands excitedly when he saw your mark of approval in the corner. He rummaged in his pocket and brought out a deflated balloonicorn, nudging you with it. You grinned and took the flat balloon, making Pyro clap again.

'Huddah! Mph mr mur!' He said as you began to blow up the balloon. He watched you the whole time, bouncing up and down slightly. You couldn't believe that Pyro went around burning people for a living, he seemed so innocent, like a child. And you always loved he was like that. He was just so adorable.

After a minute or so you handed Pyro the inflated balloon, which he eagerly took from you and hugged it tightly. You were afraid he was about to pop it, until he let go of it and pushed it towards you. You ran your hand down its neck as if you were stroking a real horse, making Pyro giggle and clap his hands. You always loved hearing him laugh.

You gave the balloon back to him when he stretched and yawned, making you look at the clock. You'd been drawing with him for ages, it was nearly midnight. You stood up abruptly, if you didn't go to sleep soon you'd be tired during battle, and you'd had enough talks with Soldier to know you didn't want that to happen.

'Goodnight, Pyro. Don't want to be unprepared for battle tomorrow, do we?' You leaned down and hugged him, but he didn't let go. 'Pyro, I need to sleep!' You said, laughing. Instead of giggling like he usually did, he tugged you to a sitting position and grabbed a fresh sheet of paper. You sat and watched him curiously as he drew something hastily. When he finally showed you, you let out a small gasp.

He'd never drawn anything that didn't have a balloonicorn in it somewhere. The picture he had drawn was terrifying, despite being drawn in scruffy crayons. He had drawn a bad representation of himself, sitting in the corner of the page with a giant black shadow with red eyes, sharp fangs and claws looming over him. You looked at Pyro with concern filled eyes, the mask just staring blankly back at you. Sometimes you wished he'd just take it off.

'There's no such thing as monsters, Pyro. Once you go to sleep, you'll see.' You smiled fondly at him, sometimes he really was a child, but he just shook his head and tugged on your arm. OK, so children normally didn't want people to leave them at night if they were afraid of the dark?

'Darkness can't hurt you.' You reassured him, but he shook his head once again and grabbed the paper, adding to his picture. He drew a picture of his mask with little Z's coming from it, and a thinking bubble leading to the monster he'd drawn...

'...You have nightmares?' You asked him, and he nodded, still tugging on your sleeve. His tugs were more sharp, more urgent now, as if if you didn't stay he might die. 'I...I'll stay, then.' You sighed, and Pyro launched a rib-cracking hug at you. He rocked you in his arms for a while before letting go and climbing into his bed. You collected all of his drawings and placed them on his desk before sitting on the edge of the bed. 'What about balloonicorn? Balloonicorn will protect you.' You said, holding out the balloon.

Pyro shook his head and pushed the balloonicorn away gently, before hugging you around the waist. You sighed in defeat and lay down next to Pyro, who was finally contented.

You woke up to something being pressed against your face. Your eyes fluttered open to see Pyro's mask right up against your face. You almost jumped in fright when you saw it, it looked rather terrifying up close, but you refrained, not wanting to wake Pyro. You decided to try and stealthily shuffle away from him so you could get up and stretch your legs, maybe even go and have breakfast.

As soon as you moved your legs back, Pyro's arm curled around your body keeping you in a firm hug. You sighed, but you were smiling at the same time.

'Fine, fine...' You whispered to yourself, shifting your body until you were comfortable. Peering at him to make sure he was asleep, you proceeded to mumbled three words under your breath. 'I love you.' You rested your head on his chest. And what happened next shocked you.

'I love you too, (Y/N).' You heard Pyro say. You looked up at him, but his mask was still on. And yet, you had heard the words crystal clear. Pyro giggled at your state of newfound speechlessness, and leaned towards you and pressed his mask filter to your lips as if it was an attempt to kiss you. And it was absolutely adorable.
