"Katy! Time to go!"

"Just a second!" I yelled, drying my hair as quickly as I could with a towel. It was already after seven and I needed to be in class by nine. I grabbed my overnight bag and hurried down the stairs.

"Bye, Auntie Katy."

"Bye, sweetie," I said, planting a quick kiss on my two-year-old niece's forehead, "I love you."

I rushed out of our house and into my father's 4x4 whom I had named Archie and whom I would inherit as soon as my dad got his new Toyota in a month or so.

"So we'll see you again for Christmas?" my dad asked as he pulled up in front of my building just off campus.

"Yep."

"I wish you'd visit more often, Catherine. We really miss you. And it's just one hour away."

"Well, I usually have to work on weekends, dad. And I'll come by more often as soon as I have Archie." I patted the dashboard. "Dad, I have to go. I need to put this stuff away before I go to class."

"Alright," he replied. I pressed a quick kiss to his cheek and hopped out of Archie. I turned around to wave at him as he drove off and then went into my building and up to the fourth floor. The smell of pepperoni and cheese wafted through my nostrils the moment I unlocked the door. Ah. Home sweet home. I dropped my duffel bag at the door and made my way to the kitchen.

"Morning," I said.

"Morning," Matt replied as he bit into his slice of cold pizza while scribbling away at a Math problem.

"Is that assignment due within the next twenty-four hours?" I asked, wincing at the spot of grease at the top corner of his page.

"Subtract twenty-three from the number you just mentioned for increased accuracy," he replied, never lifting his eyes off the page.

"Matt!"

"I'll manage," he shrugged. I decided not to argue with him, knowing that he was right. Matt was super mega intelligent, genius level and great at anything involving numbers, with the exception of time. Matt had the worst sense of time management I had ever had the chance to encounter and he'd had that problem since the first day we had met. Matthew Rogers had been the only kid to arrive late for the first day of elementary school. In his defence, his mother had had to stop with a flat tire on the way. In her defence, this had happened an hour prior and in a time frame during which she could have easily changed the flat and brought her son to school with plenty of time to spare. Matt being Matt, however, had decided that he would not go to school unless his mother let him mess around with the tools involved as she changed the flat, after which she had to take him home to wash up and change. Hence the tardiness. This became a vicious cycle of being late and handing things in way past their deadline. Matt was lucky he possessed enough charm, wit and cleverness to bypass the consequences involved with missed deadlines. He had not submitted a single assignment on time in the previous three years we'd been at college. He had not received a single grade which was less than an A. I ruffled his mass of black curls and made my way to the fridge to get some orange juice.

"How was Thanksgiving?" he asked.

"It was good," I replied, "I got to spend some time with Amy and with my family. Ugh...I really miss them sometimes. Your mum said hey. I went to visit yesterday. Charlie got full marks on his last Math test and wanted me to let you know. And Jenny is dating Carl Portman."

"He'd better keep his hands off," Matt said.

"She's seventeen, Matt...she's entitled to her freedom and her privacy. Don't be patriarchal."
