"That's not fair!" I said, "I came to your house to meet your family!"

"I've met Matt!"

"Yes, but now I want to introduce you to my family...is that too much to ask?"

"Of course not, Catherine...but, what if they hate my guts?"

"Why would they?"

"You know exactly who I am..."

"But they don't. Besides..." I said, "What matters to my family is that you treat me well."

He sighed. "Then it would be an honour and a privilege."

I pressed an excited kiss to his lips.

"By the way, they don't know about Jason. They think we just broke up unexpectedly."

"Sure thing," he replied, "I wasn't going to rehash old wounds anyway."

"I know, but just in case his name comes up...it shouldn't, but you can never be too careful."

"I understand, sweet Catherine." He took both of my hands in his and lifted them to his lips. "I love you."

"I love you too."

We left on Friday afternoon. Luke had insisted on driving so we'd gone in his Porsche. I could sense his nervousness from the seat beside mine, so I covered his hand on the gear lever while he drove, and pressed his fingers lovingly. I understood him; deep down, I too was nervous - I desperately wanted them to like him. He was the first guy I was taking home. Walking up the steps to our porch with someone by my side felt unfamiliar. I decided to ring the bell rather than just waltzing in with a complete stranger.

"Hi sweetheart!" my mother said as she opened the door. She gave me a hug and then looked up at the man beside me with excited eyes. "You must be the mystery boyfriend."

"This is Luke," I said. He offered her his hand for her to shake.

"Nonsense," she said, shaking her head at him and proceeding to give him a hug. I could see that he was slightly blushing, but his eyes were positively bright. He returned the hug warmly and they pulled away. "It's so nice to finally meet you."

"Likewise," he replied, giving her a smile.

My mother's cheeks took on a slight blush. She motioned for us to follow her inside and led us to the living room. My father was flipping through channels and my brother was bouncing Amy on his knee. Everybody was a little more dressed up than usual. I'd had no idea how important this was for them.

"May I offer you a drink?" my mother asked.

"I'll just have a soda, mum," I said.

"I'll take a glass of wine," he added, "Any colour will do."

My mother nodded and headed to the kitchen, while my father stood up to meet Luke's eyes. He held out his hand and Luke held out his in return. They shook and gave each other firm smiles.

"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, sir," Luke said, "I'm Luke."

"Pleasure to meet you too," my father replied, "You may call me Robert."

Luke nodded and turned to look at Danny, who simply waved at him, leading Amy to mimic the movement.

"Danny," my brother said, "Pleasure."

"Likewise," Luke replied, "And this little lady must be Amy. I have heard so much about you." He smiled at my niece, who proceeded to smile back and clap her hands repeatedly.
