when they asked

are you okay

i tell them

i'm fine

a phrase that needs no smile to hold its hand

that's what you're supposed to say,

right?

i'm fine

i am

if i could just convince my brain

the largest, most complex organ in my body that controls all forms of feeling and thought

that i'm fine

then maybe i would be

so i kept injecting lies into the blood that flows to it

in the hope that

one day

i'd be

fine.
