Chapter Seventeen: Dive

Danny

It's late October, and Grace is sitting beside me in my truck, only she's in the drivers seat. I was hoping that by now, there would be some change in her around me.

I thought she might at least look at me when I'm not looking.

But there hasn't been, and I told myself I would give her six months.

It's already been two months, and they've gone by quickly. February is going to be here before I know it.

And the funny thing is, I told her how I felt on the fourteenth of August.

Which means the fourteenth of February is the six month mark.

So I'm upping my game, because I seriously don't want to stay friends. I want to marry her. I can't lose her.

So I'll treat her like my girlfriend, I just wont let my lips touch her skin.

Plain and simple.

Her hands rest on my steering wheel and she looks nervous.

"I'm scared." She whispers.

"We're in a parking lot and nobody is around." I say calmly, and it's true. We're in a church parking lot and it's nine o'clock at night. "Do you know what to do?" I ask.

"No." She mumbles.

"To turn the car on, you push in the clutch and press the break. If the clutch isn't all the way to the floor, it won't turn on."

She reaches for the key, but I catch her hand in mine.

"Wait. Before you do that, if the car is in gear, you need to keep the clutch down while the engine is on, otherwise, you'll stall."

I let go of her hand and watch as she presses down both pedals and turns the key.

My truck roars to life, and she holds the clutch.

"Put it in neutral." I tell her.

She looks down at the gear stick and pulls it into neutral. I reach out to wiggle the stick so I can make sure it's in neutral.

"Now what?" She asks.

"Do you know where the gears are?" I ask.

She bites her lip adorably and just looks at me.

"No..."

I chuckle softly and grab her hand.

Gracelyn

Danny's hand clasps around mine and guides it to the gearshift.

"First." He says pushing the stick into first gear. "Second." His voice is smooth and soft and I can't focus on a word he's saying because his hand is warm. "Fifth, reverse. Now you do it." he draws his hand away, leaving me cold.

Should I run? I'm going to run.

The throw my seatbelt off.

"Where are you going?" He asks.

"I have to pee!" I blurt. I practically fall out of his truck and sprint across the parking lot to Ocean, which is what I named my Jeep. I unlock it and pull the door open. I slam it shut, crank the key, throw it in drive and go peeling out of the parking lot so fast that my tires squealing echoes around the empty night sky.
