Alec pushed Echo against the wall in the Courtyard of the Institute, "Stay here." Echo let out a breath and folded her arms against her chest with attitude. Echo had a buzz in the back of her mind due to the alcohol running through her veins and her carefree attitude had returned. Alec stood in the middle of the Courtyard and prepared a pattern for the ritual. Echo picked at her nails until she felt a maniacal feeling. Her back straightened as Jace pushed the door open and pulled Valentine through. The man had a leather mask on his face to keep him from speaking.

Jace forcefully pushed Valentine to Alec and the Shadowhunter secured Valentine's shackled before he looked over towards Magnus, "Is the Courtyard glamoured?"

Magnus was tense, "No one can see us."

Alec let out a massive sigh before pulling away from Valentine, "I don't know. Still seems like a risk."

Magnus looked down at the star that was drawn on the ground, "We have no choice. This is the only space big enough."

The door behind Magnus opened and Jace re-entered the courtyard, "Security cameras in the cell are down. We've got a half hour until the Inquisitor's done with her meeting." Jace came up to a point on the star and glanced at the men before looking back at Echo, "Is it a good idea for her to be here?"

Echo pushed away from the wall and walked towards the men, "I'm fine. Where do you want me?"

The point of the star next to Valentine was unoccupied and she lifted her eyebrows to Jace. The Shadowhunter let out a huff before giving his spot to Echo whilst he took the point next to Valentine.

Alec looked around the circle, "Is Clary ready?"

Jace gave a nod, "Let's do this."

Echo let her expression harden as she stared across the star at Valentine. The man gave an angry gaze back at her. Magnus threw the stick that was in his hand to the side before he started the spell.

"I call upon the power of the Pentagram." One side of the star lit in an orange glow, "Azazel, I summon thee." Echo liked the sound of Azazel's name, "From within our realm, into this mystical confinement, I summon thee." The third side ignited, "You seek the Mortal Cup. We seek the return of our friend. For this exchange, I summon thee."

Magus quickly pulled his hands up above his head to finish the spell and in the next moment, a man was standing in the middle of the Pentagram looking dapper in his black suit. Echo let her head drop and a smirk play on her face while the other Shadowhunters put a bend in their knees and hovered their hands over their weapons. Azazel had a taught expression plastered onto his face and Echo found it enticing. The Prince of Hell slowly rotated his head until he spotted Magnus.

"Well, if it isn't Magnus Bane." Magnus looked like he was about to shit his pants, "Brave move."

Azazel tried to escape the Pentagram but Magnus intensified the barrier, "Return Isabelle Lightwood and we'll hand over Valentine. He can lead you to the Mortal Cup."

Before glancing at Valentine, Azazel hovered his eyes over Echo. "Valentine Morgenstern. The man who dares to dream big. It is a tempting offer, but I don't have your friend Isabelle."

Echo narrowed her eyes at Azazel and tilted her head.

"He's lying." Alec was so quick to judge.

Echo kept her eyes on Azazel, "He's not."

Alec quickly looked over to Echo, "What?"

"There's no time for debate." Magnus' voice was straining, "The barrier's weakening."

Azazel reciprocated Echo's expression of low eyes and a haunting smirk as he took a step towards Magnus. The Warlock saw it as a threat and cast a spell towards Azazel to push him back.

Jace looked at his team, "We can still find Isabelle, but we can't let Azazel get away. Clary, now!"

From behind Echo, Clary came strutting in with confidence and a stern expression. Azazel quickly turned to Clary as she drew her Sunlight rune on the palm of her hand. But to everybody's surprise, the rune didn't work.

Echo couldn't help but let a smirk play out on her lips at Clary's failure.

"It's not working." Clary tried again.

Jace took a minute step forward, "What are you talking about?"

"Nothing's happening!"

The Prince in the middle of the Pentagram let off a growl and his face changed from a normal human to a monstrous sight. Echo liked the feeling that Azazel was emitting.

"You thought you could contain me!" Azazel's eyes coloured over into sclera black and Echo let out a soft breath at the sight. The anger was ravishing.

Azazel let out a roar of anger and swished his hands back, as he did the Pentagram's connection broke and each person went flying back, apart from Echo. The dark sand that coated the ground hung in the air around Echo and Azazel. Azazel had his black eyes on Echo's red ones has he broke a bead of sand in his hands. The team around both of them let out a scream at the high-pitched sound but it was inviting to Echo. Azazel let out a smirk to Echo and the Shadowdemon returned the favour. Echo loved the darkness that was coming from the Prince of Hell and when he walked from her to Magnus, she had a feeling like she needed to follow him.

Azazel knelt down next to Magnus before doubling back to walk up to Echo. Azazel looked down at the Shadowdemon and slowly caressed her cheek with his pale hand. No words were exchanged between them, but Echo could feel a small shift inside of her body. Azazel gave a small smirk before he looked into Echo's red eyes. For what you want, you will receive. Echo was confused by the words, but she didn't have time to question them as Azazel walked from her to Valentine who was also groaning in pain from the noise.

Echo glanced around the dark Courtyard and saw that her family and friends were shouting in pain, but she didn't feel any sympathy towards them. She liked the sound of the pain. When Valentine started to let out anguish, Echo turned towards him and saw Azazel hovering over him and she couldn't help but smile. The cries of pain lasted for only a minute before Echo saw Jace in her vision. The Shadowhunter had glowing golden eyes as he jumped over the duo before he unsheathed a Seraph blade.

Before Jace could push his blade through the air, Azazel vanished in a vision of moths. The sight was beautiful and Echo only wish she could replicate such beauty. Jace's blade clashed against the ground as Azazel vanished. Echo let out a disappointed breath and looked up at the falling ash around her.

"How did you do that?" Echo slowly looked down at Alec as he asked Jace.

Jace let out a breath before looking down at his arm, "I have no idea. Doesn't matter, he got away."

Echo stood in the middle of the Pentagram as Jace helped Clary up to standing and Alec helped Magnus. The Pentagram was a black scorch mark on the concrete with ash and leaves littering the area. Echo let out a few deep and audible breaths in slight anger. The pressure of darkness was long gone and she wanted it back.

"Hey, Ec." Echo slowly looked up at Alec, "You okay?"

"I'm fine." Alec let out a breath at her tone and nodded his head.

"We'll talk later." Alec went to pat Echo's shoulder but his hand hovered in midair before he pulled it back and awkwardly walked away.

Echo watched as two other Shadowhunters pulled Valentine out of the Courtyard and through the door leaving her alone with the Pentagram. As Echo stood, she couldn't help but have a moment of second-guessing. The darkness that she felt made her thrive with a disgusting amount of joy, but she knew that if she stayed addicted to the darkness, she wouldn't be able to cut her ties with it. Echo ran a hand through her thick, opaque hair and let out a sigh. This sigh had more than just air attached to it, it had emotions; Emotions that she wasn't sure she would ever feel again.
