Calvin came down the hall with a crutch and basically a full face cast consisting of bandages. He'd taken a pretty bad beating from Mekai, but he still hadn't learned his lesson
"Kyla, how you been? I ain't talked to you since the-" he leaned against her locker
She slammed it shut, cutting him off "I gotta get to class"
"Wait a minute baby, we gotta talk" he smiled, grabbing her arm
She pushed his hand off her "Look, what ALMOST happened that night only ALMOST happened because I was fucking drunk off my ass, ok? I still don't want you" she shrugged
"You ain't got no choice but to put up with me, I ain't gonna leave you alone." A sly grin spread on his face
"Let me tell you a secret baby" she pulled him close to her and whispered seductively "I'll reach in your pants, grab your dick, and...rip that shit off then shove it up your ass if you don't leave me the fuck alone" she forcefully mushed his broken nose, making him fall into a locker
Her words and actions made him groan in pain. He could tell by the look in her eyes that she wasn't joking around with him, and that made him piss his pants a little.
Kyla
"You seen Mekai?" I asked Dominic in the halls
"Nah, I ain't seen or heard from him since Saturday night" he said
"Maybe he's just taking a breather" I nodded
"Yeah maybe uh...Laura's texting me not to talk to you and I kinda gotta-"
"I understand" I raised my hands up in defense, walking off to class
Mekai hasn't been to school and the week is almost over. He can't afford to miss many days, it'll put him behind in so much. Even though we aren't together, I'm still concerned about him and his schooling. I still think he owes himself a shot at a good education.

As Kyla waited in line at lunch, she scrolled away on her phone. She was completely unaware that she was getting multiple calls from Mekai's blocked phone number.
Once she sat down at the table about to eat her food, her phone began ringing. She looked at the unsaved number and debated on answering.
She decided to answer "Yes?"
"Kyla! I need you to come to the hospital, quick" A woman's frantic voice came through the other end
"Who's this?" She asked
"It's Joyce, Mekai's mom. He's in a really bad condition" she was sobbing as she spoke
"What hospital? I'm on my way" Kyla got up from the table and rushed out of the cafeteria

"Excuse me, what room is Mekai Andrews in?" She asked the receptionist
"Are you family?" She asked
"I'm his girlfriend"
"If you aren't family I can't give you that information" she went back to typing on her computer
"Bitch I-"
"Kyla, he's back here" Joyce came up to the front
"Is he ok? What happened?" Kyla asked as they walked to the room Mekai was in
"He tried to..." she took a deep sigh "He tried to kill himself this morning"
She lightly gasped "What?...Why-Why would he try to do something like that?"
"I don't know" she wiped her eyes "He left this on his bed" she handed Kyla a note
It read: "I can't do this anymore", that's what she said. The one person that I felt at peace with couldn't deal with me anymore, it's my fault though. I'm always ruining shit for myself and others. I'll never be able to fix all the shit I've fucked up in my life, no matter how hard I try. I love you mom and Kyla, please don't hate me for doing this. It's what's best.
By the time she was done reading it, tears were pouring down her face. "It's my fault"
"No, don't say t-"
"It is" she shook her head "I told him we needed a break, I left him when he apparently needed me the most. It's my fault"
"Kyla, Mekai has bipolar disorder and schizophrenia"
"...Huh?" She couldn't believe what she was hearing. She knew Mekai had occasional mood swings of course, but she had no idea he was this bad off
"He's has it since he was a little boy" she wiped her nose "Some of it was passed down from his father."
"Where's his father now?"
"In Oakwood Institution...where they'll be taking Mekai tomorrow" She looked through the glass at her sleeping child
"How long are they keeping him?" Kyla asked, feeling heartbroken while seeing the hurt on Joyce's face
"It depends on him and his behavior...he doesn't know yet, so don't say anything"
"Alright" Kyla wiped her eyes "I'm sorry you have to go through this" she hugged her
"I just wish I could've done more...I tried so hard to keep him on the right track" they pulled away
"Everything will be alright, he's gonna get through this" Kyla kept a positive attitude even though on the inside she was still in shock "Mind if I go sit with him for a while?"
"Of course not, I'm going to grab something from the cafeteria" Joyce said before walking off down the halls
Kyla let out a hesitant sigh, placing her hand on the door knob. She walked in and closed the door. She got close to the bed, examining Mekai's body. He had carved a K into his arm, he had slits all over his wrist, and he looked pale as ever. This was hard for her because she never seen him like this before.
"Please stop staring at me" Mekai strained out with closed eyes
"I'm just trying to make sure you're ok" she rubbed his forehead
He looked at her with teary eyes "I'm not...I'm a fucking wreck"
"Baby, we're gonna get through this" She sniffled, feeling her eyes water "I'm right here, every step of the way"
"I'm sorry for putting you through hell, I need you Kyla...you keep me sane. I need you, I need you" he hugged her waist, crying
"Kai, I love you...I'm not going anywhere" she held his head
Before Kyla knew the reason behind Mekai's attitude, she was ready to go. But now that she knew he needed her, she wasn't going anywhere.
