“Jimin, watch your six.”called Suga, watching as his team member raced through the halls.”They’re about to catch up to you.”

“I can’t outrun them. They’re too fast. Suga help!”

Jimin let out a screech as he was battered with the hugs of small children and tumbling noises of laughter and glee. Suga sat in the large rocking chair in the corner of he room, allowing a few kids to climb over him like a game of king of the hill. Ever since Suga had first encountered Jimin in this orphanage he began learning a lot about Jimin. Like the way he laughed over the littlest things like candy drops and fluffy hair, how he would overexaggerate plot twists in bedtime stories in order to get a reaction from people, and how he would allow others to play with the squishy palms of his hands and his short stubby fingers. Suga wanted to apologize now more than ever, he wanted to take that hand in his and beg for forgiveness, he would go down onto his knees if it came to it. But in reality, thoughts are just thoughts. Nothing could prepare him for what was to come, and he doubted that even after years and years of planning, it wouldn’t make a difference in Jimin’s decision making. Suga felt his phone ring in his pocket, with a sigh he placed the kids back down onto the shaggy burgundy carpet and answered the call.

“Yes?”he asked.

“Why’re you at the orphanage?”asked Namjoon.”Are you just helping Jimin out?”

“More or less.”Suga answered, watching the kids look up at him with doe-like eyes.”What’s up?”

“Suga, we’re going to have a mission tonight. Hoseok’s already here but would ya mind bringing Jimin with you?”asked Namjoon.

“Yeah sure.”said Suga.

“And Suga, remember what we talked about.”

With that, Namjoon hung up. He’s been trying to persuade Suga that it would be okay. It would be fine if he dropped the act and came clean, but he understood to an extent how much this has affected Suga.

“Hey Jimin, we gotta go.”said Suga, causing a few of the children to whine and cling onto his shirt.”Sorry guys, our boss needs us.”

Jimin nodded and grabbed his things, noticing the director come out of the break area to watch over the kids. Soon, they were out of the orphanage and driving back to base. It was getting dark soon and the sun setted over the horizon, but the only thing in Suga’s mind was the car in front of him that was moving at a snail’s pace.

“Mr. Shy Guy,”said Jimin, clicking his tongue.”You should’ve taken a different route, now we’re stuck in traffic.”

“There’s only one bridge Jiminie.”said the other, inching across the pavement.

“So, how was your day?”

“I smell like crayons and hand-sanitizer, but other than smelling like a doctor’s office I would say that I’m doing just fine.”

“It’s hard to please you I guess.”chuckled Jimin,”You know, you’ve changed a lot.”

“What do you mean?”asked Suga.

“I mean...I remember when I first met you. You were really quiet and it was like you were mute. But now I can see how sarcastic you are.”

“Well thanks.”

“See! You did it again!”giggled Jimin, seeing the cheeks of his elder earn a slight tint of pink.

Jimin knows he had seen Suga before. There was just something about his eyes. It surprised him one day when Suga had walked in with only half his face covered and he couldn’t help but shower him in compliments. “Your eyes are so pretty!”, “You’re not as ugly as I thought you were!”, “Wow you have really fluffy hair!”. Jimin wouldn’t stop and that caused Suga to lurk in a corner for most of the day, but now it was the norm. Jimin couldn’t help but wonder where he’s seen those eyes before. Maybe on the subway many years ago, maybe at school, maybe at the orphanage or hospital. There was no way to make sure, except to ask.

“Hey...Suga.”asked Jimin.”Can I ask you something?”

“Sure, what is it?”

“What’s your life story?”Jimin asked.”I know you might not feel all too comfortable telling me, but I really wanna know.”

Suga froze, he stared at the red brakelights of the car in front of him in panic. What would he say? Is it finally time for him to come clean to everything? He felt Jimin squeeze his shoulder, this allowed him to finally come back into reality before he could mindlessly scream out his feelings.

“It’s okay if you don’t tell me all the details. You can be as vague as you want.”

“...Okay.”said Suga, trying his best to focus his attention to only his thoughts as he traced his hand over the leather steering wheel.”I was a weird kid not gonna lie. I was the silent type back then, I didn’t like talking to people in general so in the end I just minded my own business. But then I was kidnapped when I was around high school after staying at a library until the sun went down. I was studying so hard for this chemistry test that I fell asleep in my booth, only to be woken up by the janitor who asked me to leave. I started walking home since my parents were both off at work, but then that was when I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I ended up finding myself in a sick place filled with pain and anguish. I was stuck there for about a year or two until I finally escaped.”

“You escaped?”asked Jimin,”Was it that easy?”

Suga shook his head and chuckled,”I jumped outta the car and ran as fast as I could into the woods. I still have a few scars on my ribs after I rolled onto the street.”

“And that place...the place you were in. Did you have anyone with you? Like someone nice, I had someone with me and it made me think of something other than death.”said Jimin.

Suga looked at Jimin, a small smile forming onto his face as he thought about the moments he had shared with his younger ever since they had crosses paths once again.”Yes. I had someone really special to me. You mentioned your best friend from your past. That Min Yoongi fellow. Well, I had a friend as well. He was more than a friend to me. He was an angel, he was the purest person I had ever met. He smiled at the littlest things, he cared for me even though he was way worse off. It was like he was stupid or something, I mean, who puts others before themselves? It was him, and to be honest, I just wish that someday he would forgive me for betraying him.”

“You betrayed your best friend?”gasped Jimin.”Did you apologize to him?”

Suga froze, he didn’t know what to say. This question wasn’t much more than a simple yes or no answer. He cleared his throat roughly and fired back a question.

“Do you think I should apologize to him?”

“I mean, if he didn’t do anything to you then why betray him in the first place?”asked Jimin.”No matter what you did I bet he would forgive you. He seems like a really nice person, so my advice is to come clean.”

Suga looked down, watching as his feet rested against the brake of the car. His right hand left the stickshift and slowly inched toward the mask covering his face.

“Do you really think he would forgive me?”asked Suga.

“Of course.”

“If you were in his shoes would you forgive me? No matter what I had done to you?”

“If you loved me as much as you say you loved your best friend, then I don’t see why I shouldn’t.”

Suga’s fingertips now rested against the black elastic band of his mask. He wanted to shut his eyes and wait for a reaction once he removed it. But just as a precaution, he rested a hand on the handle of the car door, getting ready to swing it open and dash. But before he could take off the mask a loud honk was heard from the cars behind him. They were already on the other side of the bridge. Suga owlishly blinks before snapping his hand away from his disguise and returned his hands to the wheel. Jimin sighed, realizing the sun had already gone down beneath the horizon but his curiosity sky-rocketed beyond the rest of the stars which formed in the night sky. Jimin almost saw his face, he almost saw the real Suga. He wondered why Suga was so shy and hid his features daily from everyone around him. That’s when he decided, he knew why. He knew exactly why Suga always wore a mask around them.

‘Maybe when he escaped from his kidnappers, he mutilated his face against the rough road as well as his ribs. He’s probably too ugly to not wear a mask.’
