Failures - Poem 96

As your heart sinks into your stomach,

She calls the names.

She seems to be watching you as you are trying to hold yourself together.

Your name is called,

You stiffly stand and walk to her desk,

Pluck the paper from her hand and turn it from your view.

You walk to your desk swiftly.

You take a deep breath and glance at the score.

You put the paper on your desk and keep your breathing even.

You raise your hand and ask to use the restroom.

On your walk, your breathing picks up and you walk faster.

When you enter the bathroom,

You let the tears fall.

Carrying the weight of your own failures,

Along with your friends and many others around you

Begins to tug on the chain around your neck,

Adding another link to the long chain that has been created.

Take control of your breathing again.

Dry the tears and streaks.

Walk back to the classroom, gathered.

As you open the door

Your friend looks at you with tears in her eyes.

You smile sadly and open your arms to her,

She buries her face and cries.

She lets out

"I tried so hard, you don't even understand."

You rub her back and tell her

"I know."
