EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION Gillan was born at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, Scotland on 28 November 1987. She is the identical twin sister of actress Karen Gillan, and they are the only children of Marie Gillan (née Paterson) and Raymond Gillan. She and her sister are paternally half-English; their father is from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear in North East England. She and her sister grew up in the Kinmylies area of Inverness and attended Kinmylies Primary School from 1991-1999.
In the autumn of 1999, Gillan and her sister transferred to Charleston Academy in Kinmylies, where they attended until 2003. Shortly before they turned 16, Gillan and her sister moved to Glasgow for two years after obtaining roles on the Scottish soap opera River Way. It was during this time that they completed their secondary education at the Glasgow Gaelic School, which is a secondary school in the Finnieston area of Glasgow that teaches its pupils through the Scottish Gaelic medium. After graduating from the school in 2005, Gillan and her sister moved to London shortly before they turned 18 in order to study at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. They graduated in 2008, Gillan having earned a BA (Hons) in Acting as well as a BA (Hons) in Production.
Gillan is bilingual and speaks fluent Scottish Gaelic in addition to English. In a recent interview for Doctor Who Magazine, she revealed she has also been trying to learn a bit of Welsh after having relocated to Cardiff to work on Doctor Who.
