lucas, lying on the sand, stared up at the warm yellow sky as hues of orange and pink streaked across the clouds. the sun was beginning to set.
bela, who had been walking along the shore, made her way back to lucas, quietly joining him on the sand as they both looked up at the pretty sky above them.
"hey, thank you for doing this," she said in a quiet voice, breaking the calming silence between them.
they turned their heads to look at each other at the same time, and lucas felt his cheeks heat up immediately. "of course. bela, are─ are you ... okay? after peyton and everything?" he questioned, stammering slightly. he was reluctant to even ask her, but it had been eating away at his mind all day and he had to know. he had to make sure she was okay.
her mouth parted slightly in surprise. he had caught her off guard, and for a moment she didn't know what to say. then she sighed. "i don't know. i think i'm trying to act like i'm okay but i'm really not. some days i'll feel good about myself but most days i'll just feel like shit."
"so what about today?" he asked.
she smiled, a small laugh escaping from her lips. she turned her head upwards to face the sky again, and felt the cold, salty air of the sea caress her skin. she closed her eyes, hearing only the soft hum of the waves lapping against the shore. "today was a good day, lucas. any day with you is a good day."
