Chapter 26

Everyone was whispering, "What's going on? Is the big boss being dumped by Kavita?"

Laksh, as if being struck by something, finally shook himself back into reality. And for the first time, he took a critical look at the lady standing before him, Kavya...is she really the same sweet girl from his childhood memories?

If it is, then all what Kavita just said about her were mere coincidences right? He pushed away the chairs standing in his way and approached Kavya: "Whose birthday is it today?" He asked.

Kavya's expression suddenly changed: "It was mum and dad's idea to always have our birthdays together so as to foster the unity and togetherness between Ragini and me"

Laksh didn't say a word.

"And did you not know that Ragini doesn't eat spicy food?"

She blinked severally before responding: "Oh Laksh! We eat, sleep and do everything together as sisters, how can she not eat spicy food and I wouldn't know?"

Though she looked and sounded innocent, Laksh had already detected that she was lying, from the way she couldn't stop herself from blinking. He also remembers that, that night at the dinner, she specifically said that spicy chicken was Ragini's favourite food.

Laksh had no reason to keep being there, he took to his feet and walked out of the place.

Ragini's parents quickly run to him, "are you leaving already, but the party just begun."

He felt so much anger and resentment towards these two people who had completely neglected their own daughter and didn't care about what happened to her. He wanted to scream out at them. But he thought to himself, what right did he have, he had acted just the same way as they did, so despicable.

He forced himself to smile and calmly said, "Sorry I can't stay any longer. Something very urgent came up, so I have to go."

He thought of Ragini, all alone and suffering in pain. The pain he felt in his chest was like none he had ever felt. If he hadn't been so stupid and blinded by hate, he would have been able to clearly see that he had unconsciously fallen in love with this woman.

"Mr Laksh, please wait." Laksh had just opened the door when he heard the voice of the old woman behind him.

"Tina?"

The housekeeper Tina came to Laksh with a picture in her hand and showed it to him. "The last time Ragini came home, we took this picture together, and she told me no matter where she is, she would always miss me. Please tell me, is everything okay with my baby girl Ragini. Is she okay?"

Laksh's heart was torn with grieve at this old woman's earnestness. In the picture Ragini had a bright smile on, as if to say, here I come world, take me. Facing the old woman, he calmly told her, "don't worry Tina, Ragini is very fine."

"Our family has never been the same since Ragini left. Though she may not seem so sociable anymore, believe me, Ragini wasn't always like that." Tina lamented.

She took out an old fashioned wallet and took out a childhood picture to show him. "See Mr. Laksh, I'm not telling lies. Do you see how lovely and bright her smile is in this picture, isn't her smile as bright as the sun?"

The small passport sized picture in the wallet caught Laksh's attention.

"Is this a picture of Ragini's childhood? Isn't it a picture of Kavya's childhood instead?"

The housekeeper looked at him and smiled. "Oh no! You see, during their childhood days, they looked so much alike that it was very difficult for people to tell who was who. But In growing up, Kavya became the more open type while Ragini kept to herself."

At this point Laksh's eyes was full of panic, he feared what was coming next.

The house keeper continued "These two girls changed a lot while growing up. Kavya was more of an introvert when she first came into the house, and Ragini was more of the outgoing type. But gradually, Kavya became very outgoing and sociable. Who wouldn't be under those circumstances, she got herself a new sister."

The housekeeper kept on talking but Laksh at this point was deep in thoughts. He suddenly grasped the housekeeper's hands: "Do you remember when I was a child and my parents passed away, was Ragini present at the funeral and were you also around by then?"

"Of course I was. I remember that was when we all thought Ragini had gone missing but apparently she had sneaked into your yard to play in the mud and got herself all dirty and received a spanking from her mum. Ragini was very naughty by then. Kavya's parents hadn't had the accident yet so she wasn't living with us at that time"

Laksh turned pale. So, all these years ... He's been wrong about the whole thing?
