"Roses are red. Violets are blue. I want to..." he broke out into chuckles, attempting to get the words out but failing. He turned it around, and Marley gasped out loud.
"...roll around naked with you! Oh my god." Marley burst out into a fit of laughter, quickly sobering to read the one in her hands.
"I think I..." she held her stomach, "I think I might be a squirrel because I like you and you're a big nut."
"A big what?" Alec chortled, shaking his head.
Marley and Alec were passing the time at this point. It's been a few hours since they arrived at the mall. First, the guys headed into the costume store, and the girls all went to CVS to buy some necessities some of them needed.
Once the guys were done shopping — coming back with tied up double bagged costumes — the girls went alone so their respective group costumes would stay a secret. Marley wasn't sure what she inhaled at some point, but it had to be something substantial for her to have agreed to their group costume.
Oh well, she had promised herself to try new things.
The girls were shopping in the mall and Marley had no interest in spending any more of her money. Halloween costumes during Halloween season are entirely too expensive — especially for women's costumes which are made of scraps of fabric that reveal way too much to be $60 worth.
Alec didn't want to walk around the mall either, so they were both in CVS passing time. Eventually — after all the sunglasses had been tried on — they ended up in the cards isle, reading all of the ridiculous ones. Marley wasn't sure why it was so funny, because she was certain she wouldn't find it funny alone. But Alec's impressions of the cards and his reactions made her laugh.
"I'm getting this for my brother" Alec turned the pink card around, "like a thorn in my side you've always been there."
Marley giggled and rolled her eyes, "How kind of you."
Alec put a freckled hand over his heart in mock offence, batting his lashes, "For your information, I've been told I am the Mother Theresa of this generation."
"By who," Marley scoffed, "Your grandma?"
He frowned and put the card back, grumbling under his breath and making Marley laugh harder. When her phone started vibrating, she slid it out of her pocket. Not bothering to check the ID, she shoved her thumb across the screen before putting it to her ear.
"Gab are you guys done?"
"Where are you?"
Marley's heart jumped in her chest. Her eyes widened and she stumbled, holding onto the card rack for balance. In the background, Alec looked at her with concern.
In case she was hallucinating, she moved the phone away from her ear to check that the person who spoke was him.
Aiden Matthews
She slowly put the phone back to her ear.
"-ley? Where are you?"
His voice wasn't what she expected. His tone was off. Him asking where she was wasn't a friendly question because he wanted to see her. His words were shaky and trembling. Something is very wrong.
"Aiden?" Marley gasped, "what's wro-"
"Where are you? Right now Marley. Where are you?"
