There's actually a difference. Just because someone hasn't listened to the classics or old broadway musicals doesn't make them a fake fan. There are many different categories of fans of broadway but these are the two broadened genres of fans I'm looking at.
A fake fan PRETENDS to like broadway. They've maybe listened to one musical and they board about things they certainly haven't done, like go to that musical in person or have a signed playbill from the original cast. The fake fan is In there for kicks and giggles, they don't really care. They do be lucky if they manage to name a broadway actor,
A modern fan actually listens to musicals, knows the the songs, knows the actors (at least a few), but they only have seen more recent musicals like BCM, DEH, Heathers, Hamilton, Newsies, Legally Blonde, Waitress, Etc. They're into the style of music composers like Lin Manuel Miranda produce and they haven't got around to listening to the classics, if they ever will.
A modern fan isn't fake because they really do love musicals for what they are. Sure you have different types of modern fans but that doesn't make them any less of a musical fan. They just prefer modern musicals or have only heard the modern ones so far. People need to really chill out about this subject.
