When he was around 30 years old, Jesus went to the Jordan River where his cousin, John The Baptist was baptizing people. People believed that John was the promised Messiah sent by God. However, John refuted these claims. According to Matthew 3:3, John says, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

"A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
'Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.'"

When Jesus came, he asked John to baptize him. Right away we see Jesus' humble nature. At first, John tries to turn him away. In Matthew 3:14, he says, "Why do you come to me to be baptized? I should be baptized by you!" However, Jesus replies, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." When Jesus is baptized, the sky opened, and God's Spirit came down like a dove. A voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the one I love. I am very pleased with him." This part is significant not only because it reveals who Jesus is, but it gives us a picture of what Jesus is like as a person. He is this humble person who should have been baptizing John but instead, he chooses to be baptized by John.
