what you can and can't change in canon

Depending on the fanfiction, there are certain things you cant change in canon unless you are doing an AU. These things are pivotal events that further the plot. Essentially, if you remove the event and it makes you say, "Well, that's not (fandom) anymore," then you shouldn't remove it.

Such as:

- Harry Potter not being the Chosen One
- James and Lily Potter being alive
- Scott McCall not being a werewolf
- Clary Fray never finding out about the Shadowhunters
- Bella Swan never meeting Edward Cullen
- Tony Stark not being Iron Man

Just things that make the movie, tv show, book, etc itself. Of course, like I said, you can do these things if you really want, however that makes it an AU rather than just a regular old fanfiction. And please, do not replace any preexisting characters with your OC. Your character cannot just be the Chosen One instead of Harry. No, just no.
