Imagine being Bella Swan's cousin. You've noticed the odd going on's of those Bella tries to keep close, but keep your nose out of it. However, she drags you to La Push to confront one of her friends where you end up meeting their resident hot head. Only he's not a hot head.. and it's totally love at first sight. Or something (Part 1 of 2).
Sitting in the passenger seat of your cousin's truck, you pull your jacket closed around you and then hold your hands up to the vents for some warmth. You had, had your weekend all planned out and driving to La Push had not been a part of it. So far all you've heard was Edward this and Jacob that, and watched as Bella stumbled over her words as she realized she was telling more than she was supposed to.
The trees soon give away to a stretch of road where one side is guarded against a steep plunge down into the ocean by a foot tall rail and the other side is nothing but rocky mountains. You perk up as you watch the rolling waves, smiling at the beautiful scenery only to scream when Bella suddenly slams on the brakes. Her behemoth of a truck skids along pebbles and sand near a section of the road that expands into a small parking location so one can overlook the ocean.
"Jesus Christ!" You yell, biting back a wince as the seat belt does it's job to keep you from lurching forward into the dashboard. "Are you fuckin' insane?!"
But Bella isn't listening as she hurriedly un-clips her own seat belt, she then hastily climbing out of her truck as she sets her sights on two individuals that are sitting on the hood of a car not too far away. Groaning, you undo your own seat belt and climb out at a leisurely pace. Both of the boys- or were they men?- are brown skinned, dark hair clipped short and buzzed on the sides. They're tall with just the right amount of muscles and even from a distance you know that they're handsome.
The moment Bella starts screaming at one male in particular, you hurriedly close the distance between you and them. "Hey, hey, hey!" You say, ignoring the stares of the two boys. "I did not get dragged out of my warm bed to watch you cause drama. Cut it out and talk like a normal human being or I'm calling Charlie and telling him you're harassing the La Push locals."
"Shut up, Y/N!" Bella whirls on you, eyes red-rimmed. "Go wait by the truck."
You narrow your eyes at her and mentally smirk when she gulps. But instead of intimidating her, you snort and hold your hands up in surrender before rolling your eyes as you take a step back.
"Paul, go with her. This is a private conversation between Bella and I."
This time it's Paul who snorts. "Private. Right," he drawls.
You don't glance at Paul on your way back to the truck, you then opening the passenger side door and hopping back in your seat. However, instead of closing the door and being rude, you leave the door open and sit sideways so your knees are still out in the open. Paul joins you, leaning against the truck by your knees as you huddle inside your jacket and keep half your attention on your cousin and her friend- the friend you can only guess is Jacob after piecing together a lot of Bella's earlier ranting.
Bella suddenly screeches and Jacob flinches. You huff a little laugh. "That's definitely not good."
"Nope." Paul pops the 'P'. "What do you wanna bet she tries to punch him again?"
"Again?!" Your attention then snaps to Paul and you watch as his smirk slowly vanishes the second your gazes connect. And whoa. You hadn't really looked at him earlier and now that you're merely two feet apart his attractiveness is very hard to dismiss. Dark brown eyes widen in surprise before a genuine smile eventually returns. "You okay, man?"
"Hmm? Yeah. I-I'm good." Paul shifts a little closer to where his arm touches your knee and you sigh in relief. "Holy shit you're warm. How are you so warm?" That brings his smirk back and he drapes his arm over your legs in response. This time you groan in utter bliss. "So warm."
"I'm Paul," he says.
"Y/N," you reply. "Cousin to the harpy currently screeching at your friend."
"It's an on-going battle. You get used to it."
"While I will admit to enjoy watching drama unfold, I did not come prepared for today's. All I want to do is go someplace warm and take a nap."
"And miss all this?" Paul leans even further into you, gesturing towards your still bickering cousin and his friend. And while this should be weird and a total violation of your personal space, you practically purr at the warmth he's throwing off. "Do you even know what's going on?"
You shake your head which is now practically laying on Paul's shoulder. That's how close he is. "From the pieces I gathered, all I know is that Jacob was supposed to be her best friend but then he started ignoring her for some gang. And funnily enough, she briefly mentioned a Paul. Made him out to be some sort of a hot head," you tease.
Paul's shoulders shake with suppressed laughter. "I have my moments. I guess today's just your lucky day."
"Lucky me."
Watching Bella, you gasp as she rears back and swings at Jacob's face with a balled fist. Paul openly laughs. "Damn. I should have pressed you on that bet."
"I'll tell you what," you say as you keep your eyes on the still arguing friends. "You get me out of here and to some place where there's some hot chocolate or hot food, and that'll be your winnings. You can tell your friends it's a date."
"I actually have a friend whose wife makes the best food around."
"Oh, I don't want to be a burden."
"You won't." Looking at Paul, you see him grinning from ear to ear. "She and my friend Sam will actually be pretty happy to meet you when I tell them who you are. Afterwards, I can drive you back to Forks."
"I don't know. Part of my brain is screaming stranger danger, but the other half-"
"The other half of your brain is telling you that you're safe with me."
Your amusement slowly vanishes. "Yeah. Why is that? I mean I've felt comfortable with people I've barely met before, but not this comfortable."
Taking a step back, Paul then offers you his hand. "Do you trust me?" Hesitantly nodding, he smiles. "Then come with me. I'll explain everything when we get to Sam and Emily's."
You know you shouldn't follow what instantly feels right- that you should use your brain and remain in Bella's truck. But being this close to Paul and seeing his smile chips away at all your doubt. "You're one strange guy, Paul."
As you take his hand, Paul barks out a laugh. "Oh, Y/N. You have no idea."
