They will not wake

As a kid I would look out the window every single day during winter hoping that freshly fallen snow glazed the roofs of cars and white fluff was everywhere. Most of the time I would feel that imaginary tear slide down my cheek as I anticipated the moment when my eyes peered out my bedroom window to find a white snowy wonderland.

Now I look outside and think of those who are cold, hungry, shivering, teeth chattering cold. They have no shelter to hold back the ice wind or a fluffy blanket to curl up into. All they have is themselves. No shelter, no food, no warmth. And every night when I close my eyes I know that one person will not wake, they will not open their eyes to see icicles hanging down on trees, or hear the wind swoosh through the frozen branches... they will not wake today.
