Box of Masks

I wish I didn't have to put on a facade every day

The people I see every day - if I could only be myself

And not wear those awful masks

Mask to hide myself

Mask to show you a single facet of a glorious jewel

I fear letting you in

I fear rejection - cold and cruel mistress for all

I fear judgment - condemned to loneliness

I fear being unlike you in front of you

So we pass this time away speaking of only those things

The things that matter little in this life

Things safe and easily traversed

Gentlemen do not speak of religion or politics

And who I am remains despite unpopular view

So I wear my masks for you

I keep them nearby in the box under my desk

To change like the weather

Just so you will visit
