The Ember

Once there was a fire inside

That burned a brand into my hide

Made me want to run outside

Play in the great celestial tide

And now it seems that fire is out

I live my remaining days in doubt

I hesitate to scream and shout

And wear a stern and stoic pout

So every little now and then

An embers flare shows up within

I smile at my burning long lost friend

And wonder aloud just where it's been

Then deep into the wild I head

Needing neither water nor bread

From the glowing ember I am fed

And free until the day I'm dead
