Facets

I see only facets of you

Glimpses of your true self

Shining brightly as stars in the deep night sky

Turn and I see another facet

Another reflection of a feeling

A time

A place

A secret

The glimpses you allow blind me

They bind me

Remind me

That you are a jewel rare and precious

Jewels happen to have facets because

Facets catch and magnify light

Jewels are hewn from the hardest stone

Facets are cut with sharp chisels and hard hammer blows

It takes years of dedicated study

To learn to bring a mere rock on the ground

Turn it into a jewel

Choose which facets to chisel

Which angle to strike

Polish the best and brightest

Jewels are made as they are

Some may have minor flaws

Some major flaws

Some stones cannot become jewels

Which is why rare jewels like you are not just lying around

If the sun should strike my eye with a ray from one of your facets

Blind me with its intensity

Hurt my eye with its brilliance

Just watch as I blink away the blind spot

And go back to gazing deeply into you
