"Shawn?" I squeaked.
I had been thinking about what he said yesterday. The scene never stopped playing in my head unless it was to imagine possible scenarios. I couldn't stop thinking about what I'd be like to reunite with my family.
"Yeah?" He responded, lifting his tinted black sunglasses up to rest them on his hair as he shifted his attention to me.
"Maybe you're right. You know, maybe I should see my parents." I suggested, not sure if how he'd react.
"Leila..." He started, looking away at something else.
"I need to apologize to them." I said quickly, putting an emphasis on need.
"You're not the only one who needs to apologize. They pulled some shit that they could go to jail for." Shawn mumbled. I crossed my arms, starting to get a little frustrated with him. Wasn't he the one who thought of the whole idea?
"Just-"
"No. You can't walk in to that fucking house. If they hurt you without a reason, I couldn't imagine what they'd do to you with a reason." Shawn said, raising his voice but still not looking at me. I heard his voice waver at the end. I couldn't help it, but my heart got heavier when I heard it.
There was a tense silence. It seemed like I could say nothing in that moment to make my point.
"What if you came with me?" I asked quietly. Shawn's head dropped, and for a second I thought that he was pissed at me for still trying.
"I'll go with you."

"Left." I said as Shawn started to take a right turn. "No, LEFT you idiot." I shouted.
"My phone says right!" He yelled back.
"I THINK I KNOW WHERE I FUCKING LIVED FOR EIGHTEEN YEARS!" I yelled at him, leaning forward in my chair.
"STOP FUCKING SCREAMING! I'M NOT TRYING TO FUCKING MURDER YOU!" Shawn yelled.
"HOW AM I..." I started before turning trailing off. I had heard something on the radio that caught my attention.
"When you're legs don't work like they used to before." The station we were listening to in the car was playing Thinking Out Loud.
"And I cant sweep you off of you're feet." Shawn and I sang along. He sang the melody and I sang a harmony.
As we kept singing, Shawn's hand found mind and he intertwined his fingers with mine. It was cliche, sure, but it felt so natural. We watched the road ahead and sang, not even caring where we would end up anymore. It was fascinating how quickly an Ed Sheeran song could diffuse a bomb between Shawn and me.
I guess he was right about the directions, or rather his phone was right. We pulled into my old neighborhood, and I could already feel my breaths getting shorter and my heart pumping faster.
"Baby, I know its hard, but you gotta tell me which one it is. Okay?" Shawn said, making circles on the back of my hand with the tip of his thumb.
"Yeah." I squeaked. He drove slowly through the streets, making sure I got a good look at every single house. That wasn't necessary, though. I knew exactly where it was. About a minute later, I found it. My head spun and my stomach churned just at the familiarly of what went down in that house.
"That one." I said, squeezing Shawn's hand and pointing at it. He leaned forward in his seat and looked at the house I had motioned to. He bit his lip, hesitating before starting to pull into the driveway.
