Mia woke to her alarm. After chasing the clock across her floor and halfway down the hallway, she slammed the off button.
Technology. Why did I get this clock?
"You fucking suck sometimes, you know that?" She glared at the clock, walking back to her room and threw it on her unmade bed.
"What to wear?" she mused, tapping her chin while looking in her small closet.
Denim shorts? Check. Flowy top? Check. Comfy sandals? Check and check.
Grabbing her bag, she headed out. The walk wasn't far so she put on her sunglasses and enjoyed the sun.
When she got to the cafe, there were a few people outside at the tables sipping their coffee under umbrellas. She was about to walk inside when her phone lit up.
- Hey. I'm outside. Look right
She did and saw Henry with his hand up. Mia hadn't seen him due to his baseball cap and sunglasses. There was a beautiful, fluffy white and black dog sitting at his feet.
"Hey," Mia said when she reached the table and sat down.
Henry smiled.
Beautiful smile.
The dog went over to her and she ran her hand through his soft fur.
"And who are you?" she asked.
Henry laughed. "That's Kal."
"Well hello there Kal. Aren't you just the cutest."
She looked up and saw a Henry smiling at her, having taken off his sunglasses.
Holy Jesus. Those eyes.
"Mia. Can we start over?" he asked.
"Hmmm..."
Henry stood, offering her his hand to shake.
"Hi. I'm Henry and I apologize for being an ass."
Laughing, Mia took his large hand.
"I'm Mia and I can be a bitch sometimes."
Henry chuckled and sat.
"About last night..." Henry began.
Mia held up her hand to stop him.
"No last night," she said. "We just met, remember?" Mia winked and smiled.
"Right you are."
That accent, Mia thought. Stop it Mia.
A waitress came to the table to take their orders.
"A breakfast burrito and a caramel latte please," Mia said.
"I've never had a breakfast burrito. Make that two and I'll have a black coffee."
When the waitress left, Mia made a face.
"What?" Henry asked. "Is there something on my face?"
"Black coffee? Yuck. Plus, don't you drink tea or something?"
He put his hand on his chest, which drew her eyes to it.
Wow. He definitely works out.
"Are you stereotyping me? Just because I'm a Brit doesn't mean I'd rather have tea over coffee."
Mia blushed. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to offend you," she said, mortified.
Henry dissolved into laughter. "You're too cute. I was only joking."
Mia squinted at him. "Jerk," she said and threw her napkin at him.
After their orders came out, they started talking.
"So you're a Brit? Care to narrow it down?"
"Actually, I'm from a small island called Jersey. It's in the English Channel."
"Huh. Learn something new every day."
He took a sip of his coffee.
"I don't live there anymore. I have a place in London."
Mia nodded. "London I have heard of, though I've never been."
"You should go," Henry said. "It's a great place to unwind."
"Really? You must be wound tight if a city unwinds you. There are better ways to do that."
He smiled, laughing behind his napkin. Mia's eyes went wide when she realized what she had inferred.
"Oh my god," she said putting her arms on the table and dropping her head on them.
Henry laughed heartily.
"Shut up," she mumbled.
She looked up and saw there were tears in his eyes from laughing.
"I'm glad I can amuse you."
