There Should be Two

We went fishing, on a cool autumn's night.

The only things seen were lit by our spot light.

The water was low and sludgy, our boat hit a stump.

Water began to rise inside, so we jumped out before it sunk.

-

I had my life vest, so I tossed one to you.

I was almost panicked, I didn't know what to do.

Just keep swimming babe, please don't stop.

Keep your vest close, with your head on top.

-

Don't look back no matter what you hear.

Swim for the shore, I love you my dear.

With your feather jacket and my life vest,

I fought against the sludge, doing my best.

-

I heard you cough then not another sound.

That's when I knew that you had drowned.

Twenty days later after that horrible ride,

They found your body against the lakeside.

-

I should have died with you that day.

By your side I should have stayed.

But I pushed forth like you said to do.

There is one grave, where there should be two.
