I'll Change Your Mind (Datherine)

 Katherine Pierce was fairly certain that Stefan Salvatore was the Salvatore brother she loved, the one she had always been in love with. She had been very fond of both Salvatore brothers back in the day, but it was Stefan. It was always Stefan, she thought. 

 Damon Salvatore had also been very fond of her back in the day. He even claimed to be in love with her. She didn't think he meant it, but he had apparently been in love with her for decades. He still seemed to be under the impression that she loved him. She didn't know how to tell him he was the wrong brother. In fact, she had told him that she loved Stefan and not him, but Damon didn't seem to get it. So, it was that she didn't know how to tell him in a way he would understand. 

 Katherine did tell him one day, as they stood at the edge of the woods together. 

 "I don't think I can be with you, Damon," she said. "Look, it's not that I don't like you at all. I did like you a lot way back when. But I was in love with Stefan, not you." 

 Damon nodded. "I know. You've said so. But Stefan is with Elena now, and they are disgustingly happy together. I was getting fond of Elena myself, but she would rather be with my brother than me, and he now prefers her to you. But what about us, Katherine? Don't we both deserve that shot at being happy? Why not look for it together?" 

 Katherine would have liked to think he was joking; that would have made this so much easier to handle. But Damon was absolutely serious. 

 "Do you mean that, though?" she asked him. "Do you actually want something with me now, after all this time?" 

 "Would I be bringing this up if I didn't mean it? Is there any chance I can still change your mind?" 

 Katherine thought about it as Damon waited for her answer. Did she or did she not want something with him? 

 "I don't know," she answered. "You like your answers pretty fast, huh?" 

 "Well, I'm not always a patient man," he replied. "Think about it. I know I'll change your mind eventually." 

 Katherine would think about that long after they parted ways that afternoon. Would she change her mind? Would Damon convince her? 

 And maybe, somewhere deep down inside, she wanted him to come up with a way to change her mind about him.
