The height difference had never bothered Greg. It was different of course, he was relatively tall and had always been the taller one in any past relationships he'd had.
So the fact that Mycroft could rest his chin on Greg's head, or the fact that Mycroft could completely wrap him into a hug, or the fact that Mycroft could pick him up, had never bothered him. It was strange and different, but it hadn't bothered him.
In fact, he hadn't even taken any notice of it for years. He only realised when it was pointed out one day and suddenly it was all he could think about.
It's all he could see, everywhere. The smug satisfaction of being taller than Anderson and Donavon was soon replaced by the irritatingly obvious fact that Gregson had a few inches on him.
He saw it everywhere, suddenly trying to avoid some people that were taller than him, and making a point of spending more time with people he was bigger than. So that meant he let Sherlock get on without him at crime scenes but he asked John if they could meet up a lot more than usual. This actually worked pretty well, Sherlock didn't mind the time without his 'handler' and John didn't mind spending more time with Greg.
Mycroft, of course noticed what he was doing and felt the need to point it out. Maybe because Gregory had started spending slightly less time with him.
"Myc, I'm back!" Greg called as he opened the door to their shared manor.
"Hello Gregory, how was your evening with Doctor Watson?" Mycroft greeted with a smile.
Greg hung his coat up and walked over to Mycroft to place a kiss on his cheek. "Good, we compared notes about you and Sherlock."
"Gregory!" Mycroft exclaimed as he watched Greg walk, with a smirk on his face, into the living room.
"Relax, we watched rugby and had a few pints, that's it." He plopped down onto the sofa and patted the space next to as if to invite Mycroft to sit down. Mycroft obliged and sat down next to his husband. Greg wrapped an arm around the other man and pulled him closer. "What are you watching?" He nodded towards to tv.
"Doctor Who." Mycroft replied, leaning into Greg's warmth. "You've been spending a lot of time with Doctor Watson recently."
"Don't change the subject just because I caught you watching Doctor Who without me." Greg responded with a grin.
"I could say the same to you."
Greg sighed. "Me and John-"
"John and I."
"Me and John are friends and we've had more free time recently. It's not a crime."
Mycroft smirked. "Neither is watching Doctor Who without you."
"That's what you think." Greg nudged his husband playfully. "Why? Are you jealous or something?"
"On the contry Gregory, I think it's you who's jealous." He didn't bother looking up to see Greg's reaction, he just smiled knowingly.
Greg raised an eyebrow and looked down at Mycroft. "Oh yeah? How do you figure that?"
"How tall are you Gregory?"
Greg's smile fell. How did Mycroft know? How?
"I'm 6 foot 1." Mycroft continued, his smile never falling. "You are 5 foot 11 and Doctor Watson is 5 foot 7."
"Alright, you figured it out. You're super smart. You can stop now." Greg said, huffing slightly afterwards.
Mycroft was still smiling when he reached up to place a kiss on Greg's cheek. "It's ok my love. I like that you're shorter than me. It's rather adorable."
"Oh shut it."
Mycroft hummed in response and sat up straight so he was once again taller than Greg.
"You're just showing off now."
Mycroft chuckled and layed down on his back so that his head was in Greg's lap. "Better?" He asked, smiling up at his husband.
"Much." Greg replied, beginning to run his hand through Mycroft's hair. "I still haven't forgiven you for watching Doctor Who without me."
Mycroft chuckled once again, which caused Greg to smile. They spend the rest of the evening like that, both very content to never move again.
