Elena Petrescu stood beside her twin brother Nikolai, watching the young royals sway slowly on the dance floor, blinking slowly as the gears in her mind clicked into place.

It was the song, that stupid American love song the Count had sung that had lifted her eyes to the truth.
Romana had loved that song.
After the start of the Cold War, the Soviet Union started searching for new ways to advance against the West. One of those ways was finding and experimenting on natural born superhuman children, trying to turn them into weapons.

Deviants was the term coined for superior humans born with the ability to use more than average brainpower. Those who unlocked a form of 6th sense. Power of the mind. Empathy, premonition, telekinesis, and telepathy were just a few of the various powers of mind that the Soviet Union began trying to harness. Living peacefully in a traditional gypsy camp, Elena and Nicolai had been only 6 years old when the party found out about their "deviant" empathic 10 year old sister, Romana.

Elena and Nikolai still remembered as if it were yesterday when armed soldiers in pristine, dark blue uniforms stormed the camp and seized Romana, claiming her as property of the state, but once it was discovered that Romana had a set of younger twin siblings, a greasy haired man in a coffee stained lab coat ordered the seizure of her little brother and sister.
This man, Dr. Plotkin; was trying to prove that deviation could be genetic, and basing his work on German research, Dr. Plotkin carried on where the Nazis left off, experimentation on twins. He was proved only partially right though, but only after years and years of horrific experiments on Nikolai and his sister.
Once it was determined that the Petrescu twins deviation was of such low magnitude that it was practically useless as a supernatural weapon, the siblings were much too emotionally, physically and mentally damaged to ever return to society as normal human beings. They had the genes, just not the powers, so instead; they were slowly brainwashed and trained like their sister, to be spies and assassins.

Romana was the jewel of the program, and by 19 she was the most beautiful, most powerful and the deadliest spy in Soviet history. The perfect weapon. A perfect shot, skilled martial artist and trained in the art of seduction. She was perfectly able to feel and experience the exact feelings and experiences of the enemy. To sense the presence of others without seeing or hearing them, and often, to turn their emotions against them.

Once Elena and Nikolai were older, they realized that their sister had never truly been "made to believe" as they had. She simply did as the doctors and instructors asked in order to keep her younger siblings alive. Learning how to infiltrate, how to gather information and eventually how to kill, in order to keep seeing her little brother and sister for just a short hour every week.

The day the Cold War ended, Romana went rouge, leaving the Soviet government behind and going to America, becoming a spy and assassin for hire; working for the highest bidder, but not before breaking into Dr. Plotkin's lab and running a blade between his eyes.

The Petrescu twins were ordered to view their sister as a traitor, and ordered under penalty of death to cease communications with her. Though the government had tried hard to remove all emotional notions or psychical attachment, the twins still held onto a small spark of connection between each other, and their sister.

They kept tabs on her, and occasionally, communicated in secret. She had been hired by the American Supervillain, 'Mastermind' to seduce and uncover the identity and weaknesses of the world's most powerful hero, 'Captain Galaxy'. And she almost succeeded.
Her failure may have had something to do with her feelings toward her client. Somehow, somewhere along the line, the seemingly cold and, unfeeling temptress assassin, had fallen in love with the bald, brainy, socially inept Supervillain. The twins had later received a call from their older sister, that she was pregnant, and that they had gotten married in secret.
