Chapter 14

A/N: Because so many of you have commented on a German word (or two)  presented as a legend in this chapter, I thought I would address why it is spelled "wrong". It's spelled wrong because words get misconstrued between translations and cultures. They lose letters or even syllables. This legend is hundreds if not thousands of years old (in this story) and this phenomenon would obviously happen.

I hope that cleared the confusion up for you language buffs out there. Enjoy!

Eternity

noun

-infinite time; duration without beginning or end

-timeless

Once we were inside, the waitress led us to a booth in the back of the restaurant. I briefly wondered why we were placed all the way in the back of the restaurant when there were open booths and tables right at the front. I couldn't help but shake the feeling it was because of me, or - more specifically - my species. This was confirmed when I saw her glancing at me from the corner of her eye more than once. I kept my mouth shut, not wanting to cause a scene in front of anybody or bring anymore attention onto myself than there already was.

I was there for my mate, not for specist assholes.

After taking our orders, she couldn't scoot away from us fast enough and I pressed my lips into a hard line at the sight. My thoughts were averted when Blithe insisted that he put me on the inside of the booth as opposed to sitting on the outside. He wouldn't say why he wanted me to sit there, even after I protested, but I knew it was probably because he was worried I would escape again.  I rolled my eyes at him with a slight growl, but decided to give in as to not make a mountain out of a mole-hill. I had to pick and choose my battles, as my mother would often tell me.

Lisa and I sat across from each other and bonded over talking about Brian's father. I told her about the nickname "Goldilocks" that Serena gave to him a year or two ago, to which Brian jumped in the conversation, "That's where that came from?" He took up so much room on their side of the booth that he easily could have used a booth all to himself. I nodded at him as I took a sip of my soda with curious eyes, and he threw his head back with laughter. It was loud, but because the sound was so happy and carefree, it was infectious and all of us began to chuckle with him as I explained the origin of the nickname.

Moments later our food was brought out and all of our attentions went to the heavenly sight before us. I looked up at Blithe as I took the first bite of the fluffy, buttery goodness. He just smirked at me and gestured with his eyes over to Brian and Lisa and then turned discreetly to me. He opened his mouth and made a gagging motion with his finger. I looked over to see what he was talking about and saw that Lisa was feeding Brian like a child. I nearly choked on my pancakes at how hard I laughed at him.

The pull in my lower stomach caught me off guard with the intensity it struck me with. Blithe's smile made his almond eyes crinkle slightly at the corners and his mouth was crooked as he stared down at me both gently and genuinely. He had shed his tough, Alpha exterior and I hesitantly realized that what was underneath that protective layer was someone that maybe wasn't as mismatched of a mate for me as I had once thought.

My veins hummed with a pleasant sensation as my shoulder brushed against his and both my stomach and my chest fluttered. It felt nice for my chest to flutter not in panic but out of happiness for once. Whether he knew what kind of effect he was having on me or not, I couldn't be sure, but he was at least aware that what he was doing was making me happy and he continued. He was making an actual effort to make me happy and that meant more than he ever knew.
