Chapter Fifty

“Daddy?”

“Yes sweetie?”

“Why is Grace asleep again? And why isn’t Ewiot waking up? They’ve both been sleeping for a long time,”

“…”

“Daddy?”

“…Your brother was involved…in an accident remember. He needs time to recover before he can wake up…”

“Oh… Will he be okay?”

“… Of course”

“But Grace went to sleep again too, just like the first time me and Ewiot saw her. Did she get hit too?”

“Not by the truck… but you could say she got hit by sadness…”

“You mean dee-pe-sion?”

“…”

“I heard the nurses talk about Grace while we were in Ewiot’s room.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. They were talking about dee-pe-sion and… um.. su-wi-side?”

“…”

“Hm, I don’t know how to pronounce it properly… su... su-wi… su-side…?”

“Suicide?”

“Yeah that.”

“Oh.”

“What is, um, su-i-cide, Daddy?”

“…”

“Daddy I wanna know,”

“…suicide is when… people don’t want to live anymore so they try and end it…”

“Oh. You mean… like… make themselves die?”

“…”

“Why would Grace want to do su-i-cide?”

“I don’t know why anyone would… but-”

“Yeah me neither, I think it’s very silly,”

“Susie, it’s a very serious issue”

“Oh sorry…”

“You don’t have to apologize; it’s not your fault,”

“Okay… Daddy, why did Grace do su-i-cide?”

“… I think she wasn’t very happy with her life and everything that had happened in it… I guess Elliot’s… accident made her snap…”

“Oh.”

“…”

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“I think people who do su-i-cide are just angels that wanna go home…

“Oh Susie…”

“There are a lot of angels in disguise that are very pwetty and especially very, very beautiful in their hearts… like how Mummy had to go back to heaven because she was an angel… wasn’t she Daddy?”

“…”

“Daddy, I don’t want Grace to go to heaven… I want her to stay here on earth…”

“Me too,”

“I miss her… I miss Ewiot… I miss Mummy…”

“Me too… me too…”

“I love you Daddy…”

“I love you too; I love you so much,”

“It’s okay to cry Daddy, I cry all the time.”
