Going over the routine one last time before we started filming, Jesse stepped on my toes for the third time.
I couldn't understand how it was possible, since it wasn't a really physical duet. We just needed to interact a little bit more towards the end of the routine, but nothing crazy.
The song, which by the way I enjoyed, really fitted the choreography. Blackwell gave us very few directions on how we should have portrayed the story behind it, so she basically gave us carte blanche.
Jesse and I decided to go for a funny approach. Not that we could go somewhere else with the storytelling, even if we wanted to: as much as I could like him, he really was clumsy and goofy.
I hoped it wasn't the same for him with ballet...
"Shoot, sorry!" he said, once he realized he had crushed my feet again, mortified. His blond messy hair fell on his eyes while he leaned down to get his water, making him look like a sad, wet puppy.
I smiled, minimizing it with a wave of the hand. "Don't worry about it, you'll get it when we film it."
The scrunched face he made suggested he wasn't so convinced.
In his defense, the room was crowded. Around us couples of dancers were rehearsing as well, leaving us little room to practice. Maybe the extra space would have helped...
"I bet you're casting curses on Blackwell right now..." he said, after having downed the whole bottle of water. His eyes studied me carefully.
"Why would I?"
"Because she paired you up with me..." he said simply. "And not with Sean."
Instinctively I searched for the brunette through the room, finding him on the other side next to the girl he was paired up with.
She was talking enthusiastically about something, I assumed dance related, while Sean was just sitting on the ground, looking at some dancers not far away from him, unmoved by her words.
He looked pensive. Was he thinking about earlier?
"You know why."
I couldn't admit to Jesse that I was actually a little disappointed by miss Blackwell's decision. But it wasn't for him of course, I just thought this was the perfect occasion for me and Sean to set things right.
I guessed I needed to wait for that.
"I dance with Sean all the time," I said, keeping my eyes on him a little bit longer. Then I turned to Jesse again, forcing myself to be positive. "I think we'll do great as well..."
He laughed, still doubtful. "If you say so."
Fisting him lightly on his chest I decided to quote what he said to me last time we danced together. "Let's have fun, right?"
He thought about it for a second, the frown not leaving his face. But eventually it worked, because he finally nodded. Weakly, but he nodded. "Right."
It was a matter of minutes before Blackwell announced they were ready to film.
-
"Well, that was... something for sure." Blackwell said once the melody of Lost in Japan stopped.
Her face couldn't be further from approval and satisfaction.
We left the center of the room, retreating behind the group of people who was watching us, some confused, some amused.
Eventually Jesse stepped on my feet during our filmed performance, proving that his fears were well justified.
I tried to reassure him with a quick smile, carrying on the choreography, but his face was so disappointed I didn't know what to do.
