"Look at you, K! You're taking this seriously..." Tahani cheered once I got out of the bathroom, where I had just got changed.
"I can't be seeing right." Bailey chimed in, jumping on her bed from excitement. "The one and only Kaycee Rice in a red dress! I thought I'd be dead long before this day ever came."
That afternoon, on Saturday, I was at Bailey's getting ready for Julian's party, precisely in her room. Me and Tahani had decided to invade her house, so that we could help each other with make-up, outfits, hair and stuff like that.
Well, at least they would.
I was there only to hitch a ride with Bailey's mom and also to not have to go alone. I would have hated having to face a whole bunch of people by myself.
The thought alone of the party gave me anxiety, but I had the brilliant idea of teasing Sean some days ago and I was well aware that I had to go. No regrets and no way out for me.
My stupid little brain decided I had to -kinda- flirt with him, so I did and now I was screwed.
As always, consistency.
Anyways, we were two hours away from the party and out of all four of us I was the only one ready. In fact I had just got dressed, provoking Bailey's and Tahani's thrilled reactions.
"First of all, it's not red." I said, pointing at my dress. "It's burgundy."
Bailey scoffed, slowly taking in my figure with her evil smile. "Whatever, it's red."
"Well, no, it's different..." I insisted.
She rolled her eyes. "Fine, let me do it again. The one and only Kaycee Rice in a burgundy dress!"
Tahani bursted out laughing from her spot on the carpet, where she had carefully lied out three different pairs of shoes in order to decide which one would have better complimented her outfit.
"And second of all, it's just a casual dress. It's not like I've taken this that seriously..."
It really was casual. Just a simple, stupid dress. Not that big of a deal, right?
I considered for a minute and the roots of doubt started growing in my mind.
"Wait, does it look like I'm trying too hard? Because I don't want to give off that impression, like I'm doing this to impress someone... I mean, I can change into leggings and hoodie if you think that..."
"Hey, hey! Stop it. It's perfect, we didn't mean to discourage you." Tahani said, glaring at Bailey. "It's just something new to us since you never come to parties and... well, you rarely wear dresses."
"Yeah. Besides, even if you wanted to impress someone, what's the problem?" Bailey asked. "I'd be there for it."
I instantly thought about Sean and a long list of troubles I would have caused if I ever made a move materialized in front of my eyes. In the end I just shrugged. "None, but I wasn't really trying to do that, so..."
In that moment my phone buzzed, so I walked to Bailey's nightstand to retrieve it and look at my notifications.
Speaking of the devil, there was a message from Sean. He had sent me two pictures, one of a black t-shirt and one of a grey t-shirt, followed by a question.
