Chapter 11: True Colors

Melissa's POV
It was now February, the first start of Black history month. If you don't know about my background, I am part black and Hispanic. So I have to celebrate both Black History Month and Hispanic Month. My birth father is black while my mother was Hispanic. My skin color is basically mixed but I'm a light skin. I had to write a report for black history month, but how can I write a report about something I don't know myself. Nobody I grew up was black, I was the only half black girl around. I basically grew up in a rich white neighborhood.

I don't think I ever faced discrimination like most black people do. Well to be fair, I never spoke with my parents about how feel about my black inheritance, because I didn't think they would understand, it's not that they're racist or anything, other wise they wouldn't adopt me. But they never talked to me about where my family actually come from. In fact, I don't even know if I have grandparents on my dad side of the family that are still around. Or if he had siblings. I wonder if they even know I exist.

I'm also afraid to ask my dad, because when I told him I wanted to meet my birth father he would flip out on me, so I was nervous to hear about this reaction about his family members.

I went downstairs with my assignment paper, and found my dad sitting on the couch watching something.

Melissa: daddy, can I talk to you for a second?
Dad: sure pumpkin, come here

Dad patted a seat next to him, and I took a deep breath and sat down next to him and put his arm around me.

Dad: what's up?
Melissa: so my school added Black History Month in their extra critical, because they feel like we need to be more diverse with our academics. Since it's February... I want to know a little bit about my history, you know... about my birth family.
Dad: oh... you mean your birth grandparents
Melissa: technically yeah...
Dad: well we don't know anything about your dad's side of the family. We would have to contact your father about that.
Melissa: but you don't want to face him because you're worried you might kill the man and you won't let me face him because you don't want him to hurt me
Dad: that I don't want to happened, but if you're really curious about your grandparents, I will try to set up a meeting to speak with your dad about it
Melissa: thanks daddy! *hugs him* just know, you're not replaceable, you will always be my daddy
Dad: thank you baby, I really needed that *kiss top of her forehead*
Melissa: okay, I'm gonna do some research
Dad: ask your mother for help!
Melissa: I will!

I was not excepting that reaction at all, I hope the meeting with my dad and my birth father goes good. I don't need to fathers in jail right now.

Back downstairs.

Paul sigh after Melissa left and Denise came in from the laundry room.

Paul: Denise
Denise: yeah?
Paul: we have an issue
Denise: what?
Paul: Melissa wants to know about her grandparents from her father side of the family
Denise: oh? Are you okay with that, can you handle that?
Paul: I don't know, the only way I can get some answers about Melissa's grandfathers is through her birth father, unless I can ask a good friend of mine to do it for me
Denise: I'm sure Detective Harris will fill in for you. Why is she all the sudden interested in her birth grandparents?
Paul: Black History Month
Denise: oh
Paul: I feel bad that we don't know anything we can tell her about it
Denise: maybe we should do our own research
Paul: good idea

The Next Day.

Melissa came home from school and stopped dead in her track when she sees her parents and Detective Harris.

Melissa: mom, dad, what's going on?
Dad: Detective Harris, this is our daughter Melissa. Melissa this is Detective Harris that I told you about, that will sit with me to talk with your birth father
Melissa: really? Did you speak with my dad? Did you found out anything?
Detective Harris: yes, and he always wants to sends these letters back to you

The detective handed back all the letters that she had written to her father and she looked at the man confused.

Melissa: they don't look open, he never read them?
Detective Harris: *sighs* I'm sorry

Tears welled up in her eyes and she ripped the envelope angry and left the room. Both parents sighs and Papa J said.

Paul: I knew writing letters to her birth father would be a bad idea
Denise: I should have listened to you, we both should have. It's clear now that he doesn't want any contact from her
Paul: I should probably go talk to her
Detective Harris: wait, he did give me information about her birth grandparents
Paul: good news or bad news?
Detective Harris: well... it's sort of complicated...

With Melissa:

Melissa was in her room crying in her pillow, hugging her stuff animal that her dad got her when she was a toddler. She felt someone rubbed her shoulder and she knew it was her dad. She sat up and sobbed in his shoulder instead and he rubbed her back.

Paul: shh... darling everything gonna be okay
Melissa: *sniffles* he doesn't want me, well screw him, he wasn't a damn good father to me anyways
Paul: hey! Watch your language, I don't want you talking like that. I understand you're angry and hurt, believe me I am
Melissa: you don't know what it's like to have someone who doesn't want you
Paul: that's not true, I want you. Whose been their for you when you were born?
Melissa: you were
Paul: who was their for you when you were sick and couldn't sleep at night?
Melissa: you were
Paul: and who was their for you when your mother died?
Melissa: you were
Paul: exactly, so don't you dare say that nobody wants you. I love you like my own daughter and I'm very bless to have you in my life, both your mother and I and your brothers all care about you. We don't love you any less, you're family blood or not, we love you
Melissa: *sniffles* thanks daddy
Paul: *wipes tear* you're welcome pumpkin
Melissa: what did the detective say about my birth grandparents?
Paul: *sighs* I'm sorry pumpkin...
Melissa: *tears form again* it's okay, I didn't really know who they were anyways
Paul: I'm sure they would have loved you baby. I may not know much about black people, but your mother and I have done some research ourselves
Melissa: really? Just for me?
Paul: of course baby, like I said we are you're family and we would do anything for each other
Melissa: *smiles* I love you daddy!
Paul: I love you too baby girl *kiss top of forehead* wanna get started on that Black History Report?

Melissa nodded and the two headed downstairs and found Denise sitting at the table looking on the computer with her glasses on. She smiles at them when they enter and hugged her daughter and told her if she was okay? She was, and they helped her with her report.
