Chapter 33: Shooting Stars

Melissa's POV
It was dark... too dark... I kept having images of the event in my head and I just want to get out of this nightmare. Eventually I finally opened my eyes to the bright light in my room. I went to lift my hand to cover my eyes but my hand was hook up to an IV. Was I in a hospital???

I tried to sit up but I wince because I was in pain. I checked where the pain was and it was by my near my stomach and I lift my shirt a little a noticed a bandaged wrapped around me. Um... what the hell happened to me?

???: Melissa...

I looked up and noticed my dad, he looked like he hasn't been sleeping in weeks.

Melissa: hi daddy

Dad literary dropped what he was holding and ran over to my side, but was careful not to hurt me.

Dad: baby, I'm so happy you're okay!
Melissa: *yawns* what happened?
Dad: you don't remember?

Just then the flashback of the nightmare replayed in my head and I started crying.

Dad: oh baby... I'm so sorry I wasn't there to protect you. I should have never dropped you off at school today
Melissa: it's not your fault daddy. You didn't know this was gonna happened. None of us did...
Dad: do you remember anything that happened?
Melissa: no... all I remember was meeting up with Gia to go to our first class together... oh no Gia! Is she okay? She was with me dad!
Dad: honey, honey, honey! Calm down!

My monitor started going off and nurses/doctor started coming in and I was having another one of my aniexty/panicked attacks. They shooed my dad out of the room, but all I wanted was to be with my dad, I needed answers. I needed to know if Gia was okay. But the stupid nurses put me to sleep.

I woke up again, but this time I was in another room. I looked around and notice my mom, dad, Frankie in the room.

Frankie: hey squirt
Melissa: hi... what happened?
Frankie: you had a panic attack when you woke up and the nurses put you to sleep.
Melissa: oh... you look like you haven't slept in ages. You should take a rest like mom and dad
Frankie: I'm fine... I stayed up in case you woke up. When dad told me you woke up, I jumped for joy. I wanted to go see you so bad but dad said that you had a panic attack and they put you to sleep before I had a chance to see you
Melissa: I'm sorry...
Frankie: it's okay kiddo, I'm just thankful you're okay
Melissa: what happened...
Frankie: their was an active shooter at your school
Melissa: oh nooo, is that what happened to me?

I said showing him my bandage stomach and nodded and said.

Frankie: yeah you lost a lot of blood that day. You needed a blood donator
Melissa: who was my blood donator, I wanna thank them
Frankie: Joe, for some reason you both have the same blood type, he is a B. Nick offered to do it because he was an O, but couldn't do it anyways because he was diabetic
Melissa: oh... where are they anyways?
Frankie: at the house getting your things. Mom and dad told them to get some rest their, because they barely slept
Melissa: and you?
Frankie: I had to begged mom and dad to let me stay. Luckily the doctor said it was okay to have 3 people in the room
Melissa: ohhh... Frankie... how long have I've been out?
Frankie: 3 days... do you remember anything that happened
Melissa: all I remember was daddy dropping me off at school, and meeting up with Gia and Harley. By the way, is Gia okay? She was with me when we heard gun shots
Frankie: Mel...
Doctor: *comes in* oh good morning, I see you're up

The doctor said coming into the room also waking my parents up at the sound of their voice. My parents noticed me and jump out of their seats and went over to me.

Mom: sweetheart I'm so happy you're okay. You gave us a scare
Melissa: what happened with Gia?
Dad: Mel-
Melissa: dad, I'm not a baby anymore. I promise I won't past out this time, but please tell me what happened to Gia

Everyone looked at the doctor and he sigh and said.

Doctor: I'm sorry, your friend didn't make it
Melissa: no! No! No!
Dad: Mel-
Melissa: it's all my fault! That should have been me!
Frankie: why would it be your fault, and stop saying that Mel! It isn't your fault
Melissa: yes it is, the gun was pointed at me, she saved me and told me to run. I told her I wasn't gonna leave her side *burst into tears*
Frankie: Mel, stop blaming yourself, it isn't your fault
Dad: your brother is right, she did it to protect you
Melissa: she didn't have to, now I feel guilty
Frankie: alright, what if it was you that ended up dead and you saving her life and not Gia. You think she would want you feeling guilty for saving your life
Melissa: no...
Frankie: Mel, Gia loves you. She sacrifices herself to save you
Melissa: I wish she didn't
Dad: do you know how my life would be if you were the one ended up dead?!
Melissa: dad-
Dad: no Mel, I want you to stop blaming yourself. It's not your fault for what happened, it's that shooter fault, and if the police doesn't capture him I will
Mom: Kevin...
Dad: no, he deserve hell to pay for hurting all those kids including my own. I don't want my own daughter feeling guilty
Melissa: dad... I don't want you to get hurt too, it's not smart idea to go after the guy. Let the police do their job
Dad: if the police did their job, you wouldn't be hurt right now
Melissa: it's not the police fault either dad, it's the shooter fault...
Dad: exactly which is why it's not your fault
Melissa: oh... I get what you're trying to say
Dad: I want you to stop blaming yourself kiddo
Melissa: I know *buries face in her dad's arm*

A couple minutes later after I woke up, the doctor took a look at me, before we allowed any more visitors in. Kevin said he and Dani flew in town as soon as he heard about my school shooting and had Dani's parents watch the kids for them.

Nick and Joe were already in town the minute they heard too. Dad said the police wanted to question me, but I wasn't in the mood to be questioned right now.

I laid my head on Frankie as he tried to get me to eat my food, as everyone who came to visit me watch.

Frankie: come on kiddo, you have to eat. I always got you to eat your food when you were sick
Melissa: the problem is, I'm not sick. I just can't stop thinking about Gia
Frankie: we talked about this Mel, it isn't your fault
Melissa: I know, but why do I feel so guilty
Frankie: because you have a heart of a gold. Sometimes it's a good thing, and sometimes it's a bad thing, but that's what we love about you Mel, because you don't think of yourself, you care for others too
Melissa: I just feel so bad that Gia's mom is gonna live with out a daughter and that she has to raise her disable son alone
Dad: honey she won't be alone this time remember the deal with your principal? He said that they have a special needs ability in your school
Melissa: but what about her brother. He has to grow up to be an only child now
Dad: and if that was you, we would have to grow up without a daughter
Frankie: and a sister
Dad: if Gia was in your shoe right now, she probably would feel guilty for not saving your life kiddo, you can't save everyone, not even hero's. Gia will always be a hero in our family knowing we got to keep you
Melissa: o-okay

I picked up my fork and began to eat, and everyone in the room sigh in relief and Frankie put his arm around me and kiss my forehead.

Frankie: proud of you

I spent a week in the hospital trying to recover. I had to practice my walking and go to therapy, and I couldn't leave the hospital until I was fully healed. I couldn't attend Gia's funeral but my family did and dad did a speech for Gia and her family. My brothers offered to paid for everyone funeral expenses that lost their child in the shooting. They also offered to help the kids in my school that were in the hospital like me. After he told me that, I felt a bit better knowing that Gia's mother and her little brother were in good hands.

Chapter End Notes:
That's the end of Gia, sorry had to kill her off my story. But I wanted to focus on school shooting since it's seems to happened a lot lately and I wanted to focus especially on to those that were effected.
