Let's look back at chapter one, when Yuu is finally outside Sanguinem.

Would you look at that—the weather's completely different when comparing the manga to the anime!

It's possible that the weather change in the anime is for the sole purpose of trying to bring about a more visually-appropriate representation of the atmosphere during the time a major event in the story has happened

It's possible that the weather change in the anime is for the sole purpose of trying to bring about a more visually-appropriate representation of the atmosphere during the time a major event in the story has happened.

Perhaps the animation studio thought that it would be better to illustrate a dark, snowy, and cold scenery to bring about a sense of sadness and loss in episode one of the anime, rather than a bright day like in chapter one of the manga.

Whatever the real reason, the animators had a purpose.

But more questions pop up. Why did the manga creators decide to show a peaceful-looking world? Why is there good weather?

The Hyakuya orphans wanted to live in a world without vampires. They had dreams of becoming strong and overcoming all obstacles.

Mika sacrificed his own body for them. Yuu was perhaps a large part, if not the biggest part, of his inspiration to come up with an escape plan for his family.

They wanted happiness, and in order to achieve that, they sought liberation.

They decided to leave Sanguinem.

But now, outside Sanguinem without his family, Yuu does not find happiness. Back when he held the dying Mika, Yuu had realized that he already had happiness.

Yuu already found happiness by simply being with his family in the very city they thought they wanted to escape from

Yuu already found happiness by simply being with his family in the very city they thought they wanted to escape from. I think this is ironic.

Maybe the imbalance of a beautifully peaceful scenery of the human world just after a scene full of death illustrates such an irony.

Yuu can bask in the fresh air and stare at the blue sky for the first time in years.

Yuu is finally free.

But is this the happiness that Yuu wants?

Maybe there is something else besides irony that can be taken from this scene.

This can be a scene of hope

This can be a scene of hope.

At the end of chapter one, Yuu vows that he will get his revenge and kill all the vampires. (Hope and revenge are certainly not synonyms, but bear with me!)

Let's take a quick trip forward to chapter 37!

Yuu tells Mika this, shortly after their intimate blood-drinking scene:

"I was hurting so badly inside, and I wanted it all to end. I wanted to throw it all away and give up on life. But Guren told me that... even if my only reason was for revenge... I should still live. [...] Mika... Let's live on together, okay?"

Revenge is what goes through Yuu's mind when he stands on the grass under a blue sky in chapter one, and revenge is the only thing that pulls Yuu through life for the next few years.

Yet, because he has decided to continue living with such a depressing goal, he manages to find Mika.

In the end, because of what Mika planned out of his love for his family, Yuu could see the blue sky

In the end, because of what Mika planned out of his love for his family, Yuu could see the blue sky.

Because Mika saved Yuu's life by sacrificing his own back in Sanguinem, Yuu was able to find a new hope later on in his life.

And because Yuu found hope, he has the strength to help Mika find one more reason to live.
