51-A Factory

In my town, there is an old factory.

Me and the other children used to play a lot in front of it.

We had always wanted to see what was inside, but a grumpy man who was standing at the door would not let us pass. "This is not a place for children," he used to say.

We wished not to be children. We wished, to be able to look inside the factory and discover the secrets of the adults.

One morning, my mother, instead of sending me to school, sent me to the factory, without saying a word.

No one but me was surprised by it.

Not even my friends.

They still played in front of the factory, waiting for me to come out.

When I left the building, at six o'clock sharp, my friends ran towards me, thousands of questions blooming in their eyes.

I didn't answer them.

I simply went on walking next to a bunch of grumpy men, crestfallen, towards my house, where my wife and children had already been waiting for me.

On the following day, my friends too came to the factory.
