It was one of those rare afternoons where you had Harry to yourself with no distractions and no children to worry about since they were both at a summer day camp. You were too scared to send off your oldest, Livvy, by herself so you waited a year for your little boy, Ty, to be old enough–that way, you were able to send them both off together.
Knowing they weren't alone helped stave off the anxiety of not being with them for a whole day but it didn't completely erase the worry you felt. They were your babies and you've never spent more than a couple hours apart from each other. Harry doesn't know how you'll handle yourself once your daughter starts school in a couple months.
You and your husband were both lying on the sofa, your head resting on his chest, hugging him to you while his arm is wrapped around your shoulders. He was doing his best all day to reassure you that your kids were fine and that you shouldn't regret anything. You were listening to him read a copy of A Tale of Two Cities out loud when the doorbell rang.
You jumped off Harry in a heartbeat. "They're back!"
He chuckled at your enthusiasm and got up to follow you to the front door.
While dropping off your children at the day camp that morning, you ran into a good friend of yours who also happened to have a daughter attending the same camp. Both your families live in the same neighbourhood so you'd agreed to take your children and her daughter to the camp in the mornings as long as she brings them back home at the end of the day. It was a practical deal, in your opinion, because it gave you a chance to spend rare quality time with your husband.
Harry's arms wrapped around your waist from behind as you opened the door squealing when you saw your two babies who ran towards you and hugged your legs which made you giggle. Harry crouched down and gave them proper hugs while you thanked your friend and promised to see her in the morning.
Closing the door, you picked up Ty and gave him a kiss on the cheek while lovingly ruffling Livvy's hair. Harry took her hand and led you all to the kitchen to sit around the island so that he can start preparing dinner.
"I want you to tell me all about your day," you said.
Your son was the first to speak and told you about the day starting off with arts and crafts and then moving on to the pool. "I learned how to play Marco Polo!" You cheered for him and gave him a peck on the cheek then turned to Livvy, giving her a chance to talk about her day.
"Well, we had a water fight which was fun. My team won," she puffed out her chest in pride making you and Harry laugh at the fact that she constantly reminds you how she really is his daughter.
"That's amazing kids," Harry beams. "Are you excited to do it all again tomorrow?"
"YES," both your children screamed sending you into another fit of giggles.
Maybe you really were worrying for nothing. The day camp really was harmless and you needed to get used to the fact that eventually, they will start school and you'll have to spend most days without them.
"There was a kidnapping at the pool."
On second thought, you're never sending them there again.
"WHAT?!" You turned to your daughter with eyes as wide as saucers, begging her to repeat what she just said because there's no way you heard her correctly.
She seemed a little alarmed at your reaction so this time she mumbled it. "There was a kidnapping?" It sounded more like a question.
Shocked, Harry dropped the pan he was washing into the sink. It clanged loudly against the steel but you were too busy trying to process what your eldest just said without blowing your top off.
"Is that true?" He asked slowly, directing the question to your son.
Ty nodded, now just as wary as his sister.
"Oh my God," you whispered before you stumbled over to your phone on the counter and dialled your friend's number.
Harry went to comfort the children while trying to stay calm. You couldn't both be freaking out on the outside, it'll scare them.
"How could the counsellors be so irresponsible?! Is this a joke to them? Why didn't they send everyone home? How the hell do they not notify us on something this big? Idiots, all of them. I bet they didn't even call the police those—" Harry listened to you rant while waiting for you friend to pick up, agreeing with every point you were making.
Finally, your friend picked up.
"Hello?"
"Hi, we need to talk."
"Is everything okay?" You were glad she sounded alarmed, because this was a serious matter.
"Have you spoken to Jamila about her day today?" You asked, referring to her daughter.
"Yes, she had a great time! I'm glad we signed them up, the counsellors seem like great people."
"Not until you hear what my kids just told me," you can feel yourself growing hysterical and so did Harry, judging by the fact that he immediately left Ty and Livvy's side to comfort you by rubbing your arms and dropping kisses on your neck, knowing the action usually calmed you down. "Livvy just informed me that there was a kidnapping. Can you please ask Jamila if it's true?"
"Oh—Oh my, they didn't tell me anything. How unprofessional. I can't believe they'd—JAMILA!" The next words were muffled, which indicated that she was addressing her daughter. "Is it true that there was a kidnapping today while you were all in the pool?" A pause, and then you heard Jamila's faint voice through the line. "Oh yeah! Me and Livvy saw it happen!"
You suddenly felt lightheaded and your knees buckled–luckily Harry was there to support your frame, preventing you from falling over.
Harry took the phone from your hands to finish the call, thanking your friend and informing her that you will contact her soon after he calls the camp to give them a piece of his mind.
Hanging up, he leads you to the high chairs in front of the kitchen island where your children are still seated, stressing out over their parents' states. You understand they're young but they truly didn't understand the urgency of the situation?
While actively controlling your breathing to calm down you invite Livvy to sit on your lap which she gladly accepts.
"I want you to tell me everything you saw. Jamila says you witnessed it and I can't fathom how scary it was," you say while holding her head protectively against your chest.
Harry did the same thing to Ty but gave Livvy all of his attention. You were ready to hear the worst of it and to comfort your children all at once.
"Well," Livvy started, "we all got in the pool and we started playing Marco Polo but Kit was too tired to play so he got out and he laid on a chair. It looks like the ones you sometimes sit on to tan, mommy." You nodded understandingly, but still waited to hear the worst of it.
Harry was absentmindedly brushing Ty's hair with his fingers while listening intently to his little girl when suddenly, his actions froze and his mouth formed into the shape of an 'O' in realization. He turns to you. "Babe, I—"
"Not now, Harry," you scolded. "Can't you see that this isn't the time? Let her finish."
"But babe—"
The look you gave your husband made him shut his mouth.
"Go on, love," you nudge Livvy.
"So while we all played Marco Polo, Kit fell asleep. I didn't understand how because we were making a lot of noise. But he was just tired," she shrugged.
You waited for her to finish, but she instead looked at you and her father expectantly. What?
"That's it..." Livvy said, when she noticed that you were waiting for her to say more.
Harry was fidgeting, you knew he was itching to tell you something but your focus was on Livvy.
"I—What? Livvy, darling, didn't you say that there was a kidnapping?"
She nodded her head and you looked at Ty.
You loudly exhaled, directing the question at him. "Didn't you both say that there was a kidnapping at camp today?"
"Don't worry though," Livvy piped in, "he woke up."
Oh.
All you heard after that was Harry who burst out in uncontrollable laughter.
