I was cooped up on a torn red couch in the corner of the Dugout Inn. I was reading a Grognak The Barbarian comic book to pass some time. I was awaiting a certain somebody's arrival. My partner and infamous synth detective, Nick Valentine was seated next to me on the old sofa. He was currently tightening the bolts and screws in his hands with a small orange screwdriver. The room smelt of vodka and burnt food. It wasn't a pleasant smell, but you get used to the aroma after awhile. The light buzz of small talk filled the room and you could hear Vadim Bobrov, the bartender and owner, wiping down his counter with a washcloth if you listened closely enough. After I woke up in cryogenic storage, this new world has been nothing but surprises. Blood, rust, radiation, guns, murder. However, they are no longer a shock. More like the things on my daily chore list. I quickly adapted to the new lifestyle above Vault 111. In a way the Commonwealth never lacks excitement, but it also isn't short of danger. Nick adjusted a bolt on his hand and extended his arm to flex it. He observed it and nodded in approval, putting his screwdriver into his trench coat pocket. He sighed and looked over to me. "Hey, when is this kid gonna get here, doll?" He asked me. "I don't know Nick. Vadim said everything would be ready by six." I turned a page in my book and my eyes darted around the colorful pages. I quickly checked my my pip boy. The time read five fifty four. "Just a few more minutes Nick. Hang in there."

A few moments later the bell to the front door rang. Two men strutted into the bar. One had frizzy brown hair with a scarred, burnt face and a black leather jacket. The other had darker skin with a ragged scar shooting down his right eye. They both were tall and they had that look in their eyes. The look that signified they wanted to kill someone. A small, frail man followed behind them. He had tastled, smooth brown hair and he wore a red letterman's jacket. He wore his head down low with his eyes glued to the floor. "They're here." I whispered over to Nick. He nodded and we both got up. The smaller man stood in front of the two bigger men and he looked like he was about to cry. I stood behind him and tapped his shoulder. "Oh... It's you." He said. "Hey Travis. Looks like trouble." I frowned at him. "You think?! I.. I just wish they'd go away." He cried. "Try to stand up for yourself Travis. Show them that they can't push you around." I explained. "N-No... That could... That could turn violent.." He said quietly. I grabbed his shoulders gently. "Don't worry. I have your back. You won't get hurt. I believe in you." I whispered in his ear. I turned him to face them. He cleared his throat nervously. "Alright.. Um.. uhh.. That's enough! Leave me alone." He said loudly. The man with the leather jacket chuckled. "Ha HA. Look at you. Sounds like you were thinking about saying 'or else'. Were ya Travis?? Were you gonna say 'or else'?" He mocked him deviously. "I m-mean it! Leave me ALONE!" He yelled. "Mm. Lemme think about that." The man pretended to think for a few seconds. "How about no?! Ya know Travis? I don't like your radio show, and I certainly don't like you. I'm gonna beat you and your little girlfriend here to pulp." He thumped his fist into his other hand approaching us slowly. Travis got scared and started to whimper a little. He held his head up high though, as he backed up. He bumped into me and he stumbled. I grabbed his shoulders and then grabbed his hands. I looked him in his eyes and said in a low voice "Let's kick their asses." With a smile, I let go of him. I readied my two fists and began to strike at the dark skinned man. With a couple hits the man staggered back and groaned profanity. "I'll knock you out you little bitch." He slurred; blood coming out of his mouth. I rolled my eyes and thought 'Yeah. We'll see about that buster.' I punched his stomach as he gurgled the crimson liquid. I then swung at his nose. With a loud crack that filled the bar, his nose had been easily broken with my clean hit. The man fell to the floor, sitting down and holding his broken nose. You could tell he was physically trying not to cry. Our audience was huge now. Residents gathered around. The waiters and employees stopped working. All the attention was focused on our skirmish. I cracked my neck and shook my hands out. I glanced over to see how Travis was doing. The tall man had Travis' head locked in his arms as he smacked him around. I ran over to them and took a strike at his head. I turned my head and spit on the floor. I smiled and waved him on. "Come on? Scared of a girl?" I asked a little to innocently. He grunted at me and attempted to hit me. I ducked and punched his stomach. While I was beating the living soul out of this man I saw Travis look around in panic. His eyes landed on a bottle of bourbon on the edge of the sales counter. His eyes landed onto me then back to the bottle. He then snatched it and crept up behind the man. He closed his eyes tightly and smashed the bottle over the man's head. His face twisted into a stunned one as his eyes rolled into the back of his head and his body collapsed with a sick thud. The room fell silent and Travis stared in fear and shock at the man holding his injured head on the floor. He still had the broken bottle in his hand as his brown orbs stood locked onto the two men. The room soon erupted into endless applause and cheers and whistles. Travis began to look up and smile at the people chanting praises. I smiled and walked over to Travis. I laced my hand with his and lifted our fists up into the air. The cheers and hoots got louder and our smiles grew wider. There were load groans coming from below our feet where the men had still laid. Both started to get up in unison. One had their hand on their nose, still cursing under his breath, and the other held the back of his head, rubbing the sore knot where Travis had struck him. They both looked extremely dizzy and the noise going on around them couldn't have been making it any better for either of them. The men turned around and started to head out the door in lonesome defeat. I could hear them say things under their breath. Things along the lines of "We'll get them next time" and "That fight wasn't even fair." Travis blinked back into reality and turned to face me directly. "We... We did it!!!!" He breathed out in happiness and surprise. "We actually did it!" He sounded like he was having a panic attack.. A good panic attack?? "I knew you could do it Travis!" I smiled kindly at him. "I.. I-I have things to do. Listen, I can't.. I can't thank you enough!!!" He practically jumped for joy. He lunged forward and gave me a heartfelt hug. I hugged back with a smile on my face. He pulled away from the hug and turned away from me and ran out of the bar. I grinned and felt my heart flutter. 'That is one adorable man.' My thoughts were broken by Vadim's obnoxiously loud laughter.

"HAHA. HA! That went better than I had expected!!" He exclaimed in his thick russian accent. "Alright Vadim, I will admit.. That was a pretty good plan and it worked out pretty nicely." I had my doubts at first about Vadim's "master plan" but, turns out it all went well after all. "See? What I tell you?? You ready for phase 2 of foolproof plan!?" Vadim asked loudly. "Count me in." I laughed. "That was one hell of a fight kid." Nick grabbed my shoulder from behind. I nearly forgot Nick was there. "Thanks Nick." I turned around and hugged my best friend. He wrapped his mechanical arms around me. We pulled apart shortly and I faced Vadim once more. "Alright Vadim. What's the plan?" I asked, leaning on the counter. "Right! You know my waitress Scarlett, yes?" He whispered to me. He pointed over to a pretty looking blonde in a pink top and ratty skirt in the back of the room mopping the floors. "Yeah. What about her?" I looked from Scarlett back to Vadim. "Well. I think Travis might have some sort of feelings for her. I've seen the way they look at eachother. It could work. So I was thinking you could nudge her to hang out with Travis. Mm? Maybe if someone who isn't her employer suggests, she will listen." My face sort of fell into a frown. "Why do I need to tell her?" I looked back over at the beautiful woman. Surely I wasn't developing feelings for this man? Was I? "Well, it is like I say before. If someone she doesn't work for tells her to hang out with him, she might listen better." He explained. I looked down towards my shoes and then back over to her. "I... Yeah sure.. I'll do it." I could hear the sadness carved into my words but for what?? Was it jealousy? Is that what I was feeling? "Excellent!" Vadim began to wipe his table down some more. I nodded and walked off out of the Inn. "Doll, are you okay?" Nick asked me in a soft tone. "Yeah I'm fine Nick.. what um.. What makes you ask?" My eyes meet with his vibrantly glowing yellow ones. Since it was dark, his eyes looked more prominent than usual. "You seem down. You sure your okay, darling?" He asked me. He lifted my chin up to face him. I smiled a nodded. "Lets just go home. I'll tell Scarlett tomorrow. I'm tired." I yawned loudly. "Okay, doll." I knew by the tone of his voice, Nick knew I wasn't ok. But knowing him and the gentleman he is, he didn't want to press any further on the subject. I've thought about having a romantic relationship with Nick before but I quickly diminished those thoughts. He is physically incapable of loving someone. Due to his old programming, he doesn't know a thing about loving someone in a romantic type of way. And he's a little to old for me. Besides synths don't age. Humans do. It just wouldn't work. I see Nick as my absolute best friend. There's Maccready, Deacon, and even Hancock and Preston, but Nick takes first place. Travis on the other hand.. I'm confused about. Do I really have feelings for him? If I don't, then why am I so jealous at the thought of him and Scarlett being together. I need to sleep on things..
